Job Description

The Bilingual Phlebotomist safely and accurately collects, processes, and prepares specimens for laboratory testing in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role requires strong venipuncture skills from day one, clear and courteous communication with patients in both Spanish and English, and consistent attention to detail to maintain specimen integrity and accurate documentation.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws and venipunctures independently using straight needles and butterfly needles from the first day on the job.

• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.

• Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients in both Spanish and English, ensuring understanding and comfort.

• Label all specimen tubes accurately and match them to the corresponding laboratory requisition forms.

• Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order to maintain specimen integrity.

• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.

• Package specimens appropriately for transport, following all required procedures to maintain proper handling and temperature conditions.

• Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes as specified by protocol.

• Accurately label all specimens and follow different procedures outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport and testing.

• Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and update patient information in the system as required.

• Participate in an onsite mock blood draw with a phlebotomy professional as part of the skills evaluation process.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2 years of recent phlebotomy experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

• Demonstrated proficiency with straight needles and the ability to perform venipunctures independently from day one.

• Strong hands-on experience with blood draws, venipuncture, and general phlebotomy procedures.

• Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established protocols.

• Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English, with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients.

• Reliable and punctual work habits with a strong sense of responsibility.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients and clinical staff.

• High attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy when matching requisitions, labels, and specimens.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.

• Experience working in a fast-paced clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment.

• Comfort explaining medical procedures to patients and addressing questions in a clear and reassuring manner.

• Ability to follow detailed protocols and standard operating procedures consistently.

• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks efficiently throughout the day.

Work Environment

• This position operates in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting with a strong focus on accuracy, safety, and patient interaction.

• The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

• The role involves frequent standing, walking between collection and processing areas, and regular use of phlebotomy and laboratory equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport materials.

• Team members work closely with other healthcare professionals and use computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information, verify orders, and document specimen handling.

• The environment emphasizes professionalism, cleanliness, and adherence to established safety and infection control procedures.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bronx, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
