Job Description & Requirements
Academic Gastroenterology & Hepatology Faculty
StartDate: ASAP Pay Rate: $430000.00 - $600000.00
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is seeking academic gastroenterologists and hepatologists for multiple faculty opportunities within its rapidly expanding Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Candidates can align their clinical focus, academic interests, and long-term career goals with UTMB‘s expanding programs, supported by new clinical facilities, expanded subspecialty services, enhanced research infrastructure, and continued investment in faculty and fellowship education.
This opportunity is ideal for physicians who want more than a traditional faculty role. Faculty will have flexibility to build a rewarding academic career in a clinically robust, subspecialty-rich environment while developing expertise, pursuing educational leadership, engaging in research, shaping clinical programs, and contributing to the future direction of the division.
UTMB is strategically expanding across gastroenterology hospitalist medicine, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, advanced endoscopy, education, and future leadership initiatives. Rather than recruiting for one narrowly defined role, the division is seeking faculty who can help shape their practice and contribute to the future direction of the program.
Opportunity Highlights
Faculty appointment in a growing academic gastroenterology and hepatology division within a major University of Texas System academic health center with significant institutional investment in facilities, technology, advanced programs, faculty development, and long-term growth.
Contribute to a multi-position expansion across gastroenterology hospitalist coverage, hepatology, transplant hepatology, advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and general academic gastroenterology.
Help advance planned program growth, including a liver transplant program, expanded endoscopy capacity, a new ambulatory digestive health center in Clear Lake, and continued development in inflammatory bowel disease, foregut, and pancreaticobiliary care.
Teach and mentor gastroenterology fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice learners with protected time, mentorship, and research support without sacrificing clinical scope.
Access robust academic infrastructure, including clinical research coordinators, a biorepository, support for endoscopy research, inflammatory bowel disease registry, clinical and translational science support, wet-lab resources, biostatistics, and grant management support.
Pursue a tailored academic path with opportunities in clinician-educator, physician-scientist, subspecialty niche program development, fellowship education, and select leadership roles with strong divisional support.
Potential leadership opportunities in education, subspecialty development, and program growth.
Practice within a high-acuity referral network serving a broad and growing patient population, with increasing procedural volume and strong demand across outpatient, inpatient, and endoscopy services.
Benefit from a competitive academic compensation structure, standard academic benefits, continuing medical education allowance, relocation assistance, and incentive-based earning potential through the Faculty Compensation Incentive Plan.
Community Information
UTMB offers flexibility to practice across Galveston, League City, Clear Lake, Friendswood, and additional UTMB locations in surrounding Greater Houston communities, based on divisional need and candidate interests.
The Greater Houston and Gulf Coast region offers physicians flexible lifestyle options across coastal, suburban, and metropolitan communities. Galveston combines coastal living, history, culture, natural amenities, boutique shopping, year-round events, and attractions such as Moody Gardens, The Historic Pleasure Pier, The Bryan Museum, and The Strand. League City, located along Clear Lake and about 30 miles south of downtown Houston, offers access to waterfront recreation, schools, parks, dining, medical resources, Galveston Bay, Space Center Houston, and the wider Houston employment market.
Live coastal, suburban, or Houston-adjacent, depending on family, school, commute, and lifestyle preferences.
Enjoy access to beaches, waterfront recreation, historic districts, museums, restaurants, and year-round events.
Consider residential options such as League City, Clear Lake, Friendswood, Galveston, and other Greater Houston and Gulf Coast communities.
Candidate Qualifications

Board certified or board eligible in internal medicine and gastroenterology; hepatology, transplant hepatology, advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and related subspecialty interests are welcome.
