Job Title: Counter Sales Associate

Job Description

The Counter Sales Associate supports a wholesale HVAC distributorship by managing the sales counter and showroom, delivering exceptional customer service, and driving sales of equipment, parts, and supplies. This role operates in a sales-oriented environment, working closely with internal teams, vendors, and contractors to meet customer needs, ensure accurate order processing, and maintain a safe, organized, and professional workspace.

Responsibilities

• Provide strong customer service at the sales counter in a wholesale HVAC environment, ensuring a positive experience for all walk-in and telephone customers.
• Interact professionally with internal and outside salespeople, vendors, and contractors to support sales and customer service activities.
• Complete the full sales order process for customers, including order entry, verification, and follow-up, with a focus on up-selling associated items.
• Service walk-in and telephone customers by assisting with product selection, sourcing and shipping parts, and providing accurate information on availability and delivery.
• Support inventory control by assisting with stocking, cycle counts, and basic inventory management tasks.
• Assist with warranty administration, including processing claims and coordinating with appropriate parties to resolve issues.
• Research products using the computer system, catalogs, telephone, or other reference sources to identify and recommend appropriate solutions for customer needs.
• Arrange stock on shelves or racks in the sales area, maintain proper merchandising standards, and ensure products are neatly organized and easy to locate.
• Perform showroom merchandising and re-stocking to keep displays current, appealing, and aligned with sales priorities.
• Apply suggestive selling techniques and up-sell products and services to current and prospective customers to increase sales and enhance customer value.
• Assist in resolving customer relations issues for both dealers and end users by listening, troubleshooting, and providing timely, professional solutions.
• Conduct outgoing customer sales or service calls to follow up on orders, address concerns, and strengthen customer relationships.
• Adhere to all company safety protocols and procedures while performing warehouse and counter sales activities.
• Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and ensure proper use when operating equipment or handling materials.
• Report any safety hazards, near-misses, or incidents immediately to management to support a safe working environment.
• Participate in regular safety training sessions and drills and apply safety best practices in daily tasks.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workspace, including the sales counter, showroom, and surrounding areas.
• Follow all guidelines for the safe handling, movement, and storage of products, including HVAC equipment and related materials.
• Maintain a professional and safety-conscious demeanor during all customer and coworker interactions.
• Operate warehouse equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks as needed to move, load, or unload products safely.
• Use RF scanners and related technology to pick, pack, and track inventory accurately.
• Perform general labor and material handling tasks as needed to support warehouse and counter operations.
• Operate computer and telephone equipment for extended periods to process orders, communicate with customers, and manage product information.
• Complete required computer-based training prior to starting the job and stay current with ongoing training as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support overall branch operations and customer satisfaction.

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated experience with HVAC equipment in a wholesale distribution setting.
• High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent experience.
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact effectively with walk-in and telephone customers.
• Experience with inventory, picking, packing, and general labor in a warehouse or distribution environment.
• Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other warehouse equipment safely.
• Proficiency using RF scanners or similar tools for inventory and order processing.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on problem-solving and relationship-building.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
• Mechanical or technical aptitude, particularly related to HVAC products and components.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar productivity tools to support order entry, communication, and basic reporting.
• Ability to move parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds as part of daily duties.
• Ability to stand, sit, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed to access equipment and perform job tasks.
• Visual acuity sufficient to read labels, inspect equipment, monitor inventory, and operate machinery safely, including close and distance vision, color differentiation, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus.
• Valid driver’s license if driving is an essential function of the specific assignment.

• Experience in sales, operations, purchasing, or inventory management.
• Experience working in a wholesale or distribution environment, particularly with HVAC products.
• Demonstrated interest in continuous learning, mentoring, and leadership development.
• Mechanical or technical experience beyond HVAC, such as general equipment or tools.
• Comfort using computer-based training platforms and learning new software systems.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support both counter sales and warehouse operations as needed.

Work Environment

This role is based in a wholesale HVAC distribution facility that includes both a customer-facing sales counter and an active warehouse. The position requires regular movement of parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and frequent positioning of the body to stand, sit, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, or crawl in order to access equipment and inventory. You will operate forklifts, pallet jacks, RF scanners, computers, and telephones for extended periods while handling orders and customer inquiries. Visual acuity is essential for reading labels, inspecting equipment, monitoring inventory, and safely operating machinery, including the ability to distinguish colors and maintain depth perception and focus. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some overtime during weekdays as needed. The environment emphasizes safety, with established protocols, required PPE, and regular safety training. Dress is practical and appropriate for a warehouse and counter sales setting, supporting both professional customer interaction and safe material handling.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hilton Head Island, SC.

The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $19.00/hr.
