Journeyman Electrician

ABOUT THE POSITION :

Working under general supervision, the Electrician possesses an understanding of low and medium-voltage electrical systems up to 4.16 kV and performs repairs, maintenance, and installations in accordance with all applicable safety protocols and electrical regulations. Assists in the operation and maintenance of the campus electrical substation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following are the fundamental duties and responsibilities of this position which the incumbent must be able to perform to fulfill the purpose and requirements of this position.

Electrical Systems:

• Assist the Substation Foreman in the operation and maintenance of the campus electrical substation. Troubleshoot electrical problems by locating and determining electrical malfunctions using test instruments such as ammeter, multimeter, circuit tracer, etc.

• Repair malfunctions by such methods as replacing burnt out elements and fuses, bypassing or replacing defective wiring, cleaning and troubleshooting motors and controls, and replacing fixture ballasts.

• Test electrical equipment such as motors and heaters for safety and efficiency. Bend and install wire-mold, EMT, and rigid conduit.

• Install fixtures, motors, and other electrical equipment.

• Repair motor controls and VFD troubleshooting

• Inspect circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding and repairing or rewiring systems according to building codes and safety regulations.

• Repair mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic components of electrical equipment.

• Read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, maintenance manuals and specifications. Troubleshoot existing installations and install new electrical systems based on this information.

• Support the Electric Shop and Central Facilities Services performing other duties as assigned.

• Maintain as-built drawings of work undertaken to depict actual construction variances from design drawings.

• Learn BAS controls as required by updated technologies.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Unless otherwise stated, the following qualifications are required to perform the essential functions of this position, or the individual must demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other qualifications not listed below.

Education/Training : High school diploma, or the equivalent in a combination of education, training, and/or additional experience beyond the minimum required.

Experience : Five (5) years of trade experience. Assignments inside the substation may only be performed by individuals with hands-on switchgear training or the ability to complete switchgear training within one year of hire or by those working under the direct supervision of a qualified substation operator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

• Able to understand, read, write, and speak English clearly.

• Working knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in repairing and installing electrical circuitry and equipment.

• Working knowledge of NEC (National Electrical Code).

• Working knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA safety regulations applicable to job duties.

• Working knowledge of motor control circuits and energy management systems.

• Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, determine linear measurements, compute areas and volumes of conventional shapes and forms, and compute approximate weight of objects.

• Ability to climb ladders, crawl in attics and under buildings, lift and carry heavy equipment, bend, stoop, work from heights, and work in uncomfortable positions.

• Ability to work under all weather conditions.

• Basic skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Be able to be contacted by telephone during non-working hours.

• Be available for overtime work and to be on-call.

• Be able to wear protective clothing and equipment as required by the tasks being performed.

• Be able to work in a safe manner and comply with all applicable OSHA and Cal/OSHA rules.

• Effective and professional communication skills with a diverse population of team members, contract personnel, and other internal and external contacts.

• Present a neat and professional appearance and be capable of performing all tasks and presenting oneself in a manner that reflects favorably on CFS and TCCS, and of promoting the interests of these organizations throughout The Claremont Colleges and TCCS.

Certifications/Licenses: California State Electrician Certificate (Journeyman Level)

Other: A valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to TCC’s automobile liability insurance provider. Responsible for the safe operation of golf carts, adhering to manufacturer-specified weight limits and safety requirements at all times.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completion of a recognized Journeyman Electrician apprenticeship program (e.g., IBEW) is highly desirable.

• Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) expertise

• NFPA 70E compliance

• Previous Substation experience is highly desirable

• OSHA 10 certification

Physical Requirements:

• A valid driver’s license and satisfactory results on the following post-offer pre-employment driving record check.

• This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding work on a continuous basis and involves prolonged standing and walking, frequent movement into varying body positions, and regular climbing of ladders, stairs, scaffolding, or similar structures.

• The role routinely requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials, equipment, and objects weighing up to 40 pounds, as well as working in indoor and outdoor environments under varying weather and environmental conditions, including noisy, confined, elevated, or low-ventilation spaces.

• Employees must be able to safely operate vehicles, equipment, or machinery, including street-legal golf carts and company vehicles, communicate effectively in person and by phone or other devices, read and interpret printed or electronic materials, and occasionally perform computer-based work requiring repetitive hand and wrist movement.

• Required safety practices include wearing designated uniforms, non-slip or work shoes, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work Schedule :

The regular hours for this full-time position are 40 hours scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Will be added to on-call rotation to include weekends. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the organization or business unit.

COMPENSATION:

Pay : The pay rate for this position is competitive and commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position, between $38.00-$40.00 per hour.
