Principal Accountant

County of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department seeks a self‑motivated, collaborative Principal Accountant to lead the Roads Finance team. Responsibilities Provide financial administration of the County’s Road Fund. Support capital and maintenance road infrastructure projects, including budgeting and tracking. Process and administer federal, state and local grant reimbursements. Supervise three accounting staff. Assist with the annual Road Fund reporting, including the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report and the Annual Roads Report. Calculate customer fees for services provided to the public. Prepare monthly project reporting and track revenue streams related to road projects. Participate in the Countywide Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) upgrade slated to launch in April 2027. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field. Two years of experience at a level equivalent to Accountant III. Two years of supervisory or lead experience. Governmental accounting experience and knowledge of GAAP. Experience with tracking and billing reimbursable grants, developing departmental or programmatic budgets. Experience preparing periodic financial reports such as the Single Audit Financial Assistance Report. Strong analytical abilities and a problem‑solving mindset.
