Installation Technician

This hands-on role focuses on installing pre-made and pre-assembled truck equipment for municipal fleets, government vehicles, and commercial clients, as well as performing repairs and service work on equipment originally installed by the company. The Installation Technician uses strong mechanical aptitude, proficiency with hand and power tools, and a commitment to safety and quality to ensure that each vehicle is outfitted to exact specifications and operates reliably.

Responsibilities

• Install pre-assembled truck bodies, lift gates, van interiors, dump bodies, snow removal equipment, and other specialty truck equipment.
• Perform hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical connections to ensure all installed equipment functions correctly and safely.
• Conduct repairs, adjustments, and service work on equipment originally installed by the company.
• Read and interpret work orders, technical manuals, and installation instructions to complete projects accurately.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on installed equipment.
• Collaborate with team members to meet project deadlines and client specifications.
• Use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialty tools to complete installations and repairs.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards and safety guidelines.
• Follow all safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers regarding job status, issues, and required materials.

Essential Skills

• 13 years of basic to advanced mechanical experience.
• Ability to perform mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical connections on truck equipment.
• Knowledge of 1224V automotive electrical systems.
• Basic knowledge of air and hydraulic systems.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, technical manuals, and installation instructions.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and adjust installed equipment.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a team to meet deadlines and client specifications.
• Commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Proficiency with hand tools such as socket wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, pliers, and adjustable wrenches.
• Proficiency with power tools such as drills, impact drivers, angle grinders, reciprocating saws, and circular saws.
• Ability to use measuring and marking tools including tape measures, calipers, levels, chalk lines, and squares.
• Comfort using specialty tools such as torque wrenches, hydraulic crimpers, wire strippers, and multimeters for electrical testing.
• Ability to use fastening tools such as rivet guns, clamps, hammers, and mallets.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to build and assemble components accurately.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Possession of a basic mechanic's toolbox and personal tools suitable for daily installation and repair work.
• Welding knowledge is a plus but not required, as training is provided for cutting and welding tools such as oxy-acetylene torches and MIG welders.
• Experience using cutting and welding tools, or willingness to learn these skills.
• Familiarity with shop safety practices and proper use of personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection.
• Experience in installation, mechanical assembly, troubleshooting, and general build work on vehicles or equipment.
• Comfort working with hand and power tools for extended periods.
• Ability to adapt to varying project requirements and equipment types.

Work Environment

This role is based in a shop setting focused on truck upfitting and equipment installation. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks. Overtime is not frequent, but candidates should remain open to additional hours when required by workload or project deadlines. Technicians work with a wide range of tools, including hand tools, power tools, specialty tools, fastening tools, and cutting and welding equipment, with the option to use personal tools or those provided by the shop. The environment prioritizes safety and organization, with required use of personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection. Work is performed indoors in a shop environment where attention to detail, cleanliness, and adherence to safety procedures are essential.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portsmouth, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
