Compensation: $115,000 – $125,000 annually. In the interest of pay equity, this range is nonnegotiable.
Benefits: Employer-paid benefits, 12+ paid holidays, 28 days PTO, 10 sick days, 5 bereavement days, remote and tech reimbursements and remote work stipends, 35–40 hour work week. 100% health premium coverage for employees, 50% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for spouses and dependents, 401(k) plan with a 4% employer match.

About Abortion Fund of Ohio
Abortion Fund of Ohio has been fighting for reproductive freedom in Ohio for over 30 years. We exist because the right to abortion means nothing without the ability to access it — and for too many Ohioans, that access has never been guaranteed. Over the course of our history, we have served more than 20,000 people through direct support, education, and abortion access funding.
The Role
The Executive Director reports to the AFO Board of Directors and is responsible for the operational, financial, and external leadership of the organization. The ED works in close partnership with the Board to influence organizational strategy and is accountable for translating that strategy into execution across all functional areas.
1 - Executive Leadership & Organizational Management
- Leading day-to-day operational and strategic decision-making across all functional areas
- Identifying and managing organizational risks — political, financial, operational, and reputational
- Serving as the primary staff liaison to the Board: reporting, recommending, and keeping the board equipped to govern effectively
- Ensuring continuity and coordination across programs, development, operations, and communications
- Cultivating an organizational culture rooted in values alignment, care, and accountability
2- Development and Fundraising
- Leading overall fundraising strategy and execution, including annual campaigns (e.g., Fund-a-Thon, monthly donor campaign, end-of-year giving)
- Managing and cultivating major donor relationships and stewarding institutional funder partnerships
- Overseeing the monthly donor program and donor retention strategy
- Prospecting, writing, and submitting grants and grant reports
- Managing the pipeline: tracking incoming revenue, outstanding pledges, DAFs, matching gifts, and checks
3 - Financial Management and Oversight
- Reviewing financial reports and establishing healthy cash flow management practices
- Working with the accountant and contractors to oversee clinic and vendor payments, invoices, and reconciliation
- Ensuring appropriate allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds
- Supporting budget tracking and making financial decisions in real time
- Overseeing the organization’s endowment, investments, and long-term financial planning
4 - Operations and Systems Development
- Continuing the build-out of organizational systems, policies, and documented workflows
- Overseeing all administrative functions: systems access, CRM, payroll platform, donor platforms
- Managing vendor relationships and contracts
- Coordinating across departments to identify and close operational gaps
- Prioritizing the recruitment of a dedicated Operations Director — currently supported by a contractor
- Physical office management and logistics
5 - Human Resources and People Leadership
- Direct supervision of all staff (currently four team members plus two open positions)
- Hiring, onboarding, and managing role transitions
- Staff performance management, feedback, and capacity planning
- Job description development and revision
- Staff policy and handbook development and ongoing revisions
- Organizational culture stewardship — holding and modeling AFO’s values in daily practice
- Conflict resolution grounded in restorative justice principles
- Planning and facilitating staff and Board retreats
6 - Compliance, Risk, and Legal Oversight
- Ensuring compliance with IRS filing requirements, state nonprofit registrations, and all applicable regulations (in coordination with the accountant)
- Maintaining organizational insurance coverage: liability, D&O, and any program-specific policies
- Managing legal relationships and escalating legal issues appropriately
- Ensuring compliance in donor acknowledgment, financial reporting, and grant management
- Navigating risk related to AFO’s direct service work, including patient support and the legal program
- Overseeing data privacy and handling of sensitive client information
7 - Program Oversight
- Managing all program staff and providing strategic direction across Patient Navigation, Legal Access, and Community Engagement
- High-level oversight of the Patient Navigation program, including decision-making on patient funding and resource allocation
- Supporting and troubleshooting escalated or complex patient cases
- Maintaining relationships with clinics across Ohio and national partners
- Overseeing the Legal Access Program and judicial bypass support
- Ensuring continuity of direct service operations at all times
- Overseeing advocacy initiatives and reproductive health supply distribution
- Leading the development and implementation of new programs as the organization grows
8 - External Relations, Advocacy, and Partnerships
- Serving as AFO’s primary spokesperson to media, funders, coalition partners, and the broader community
- Maintaining and deepening relationships with clinics across Ohio and nationally
- Coordinating with partner abortion funds and support organizations
- Representing AFO in coalition spaces, at conferences, and in public advocacy
- Managing sensitive communications with partners and stakeholders, particularly in a hostile political environment
9 - Communications and Narrative Strategy
- Setting organizational messaging direction and narrative strategy
- Ensuring alignment between communications, programs, development, and advocacy
- Reviewing and approving public-facing content and campaigns
- Overseeing fundraising and donor communications
- Managing sensitive or high-risk communications, particularly in the current political environment
What We Are Looking For
- Minimum five years of senior nonprofit leadership experience, including direct supervision of staff and managing managers
- A demonstrated track record of building or strengthening organizational systems, operations, and infrastructure
- Proven fundraising success: donor cultivation, grant writing and management, campaign leadership, and prospecting across a $1.5M+ budget
- Strong financial management skills: budgeting, reporting, fiscal oversight, and the ability to make sound financial decisions under pressure
- Deep, demonstrable commitment to Reproductive Justice and an intersectional framework encompassing gender, racial, and economic justice
- Experience leading in politically contested or hostile environments — and the resilience and judgment to sustain that leadership over time
- Excellent communication skills across all audiences: staff, board, media, funders, coalition partners, elected officials, and community
- Experience building and leading fully remote teams with clarity, accountability, and care
- Understanding of nonprofit compliance, board governance, and day-to-day nonprofit operations
- Ability to handle sensitive information with the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality
- Lived experience navigating abortion access is highly valued
