Supervisor of Special Education

SUPERVISOR, SPECIAL EDUCATION Commencing with the 2026-2027 school year, the Region 9 Public School District (Joel Barlow High School) seeks a highly skilled leader to coordinate special education programs for the high school under the direction of the Easton, Redding & Region 9 (ER9) K-12 Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Services.
Service Orientation : The Supervisor must be oriented to serve all special needs stakeholders as well as be committed to the welfare of the larger school community. He/she must be able to establish a program culture that emphasizes teamwork, professionalism and continuous improvement as well as compliance with state and federal mandates. He/she must be capable of the self-reflection required for individual growth and program leadership.
Other Qualities : The Supervisor must be well-versed in special education law and evidence-based instructional practices. He/she must be an effective communicator and empathic listener, able to understand multiple perspectives and broker shared understandings through problem-solving that emphasizes common interests. He/she must be able to sustain healthy relationships among staff as well as between school and home.
Responsibilities: Supervise and evaluate special education department chair, special education teachers, social workers, psychologists, speech & language pathologists, assistive technology specialist, and special education paraeducators and behavior technicians.
Ensure special education staff is appropriately trained.
Provide leadership in all situations, modeling for and directing staff in order to provide appropriate programming for identified students.
Coordinate, monitor, and evaluate programs to ensure appropriate articulation and sharing of services.
Keep abreast of emerging best practices and make recommendations related to continuous improvement.
Serve as liaison and compliance officer with the state for special education and other special grant programs.
Function as advisor to staff members, students and parents on special education concerns. Work under the direction of the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Services to establish policies and regulations to coordinate the operation of all special education services.
Facilitate PPTs
Provide and monitor contracted assessment and services in all related service areas (speech, auditory processing, psychiatric and psychological counseling, special transportation, placement in other public and private facilities).
Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Services on development and submission of the IDEA grant.
Assist with the development and the management of the Special Education budget. Collaborate with building administrators and department chairs.
Assist with a smooth transition of students with special needs from middle school to high school. Be an active member of the Easton, Redding and Region 9 School Districts Administrative Council.
Requirements: Applicants must hold CT certifications - 092 endorsement, Intermediate Administration or Supervision and 065 endorsement in Comprehensive Special Education, K through Grade 12 or a special education related service.
Previous experience in a leadership position preferred.
Schedule, Salary and Benefits: Twelve-month position
Annual salary $160,465 prorated based on start date
Annuity - $3,754
