Summary This open continuous announcement seeks Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) to serve in the Civil or Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. Positions are located in Brooklyn, NY and Central Islip, NY. The Office’s Criminal and Civil Divisions handle a large and complex docket that includes federal crimes, civil actions, and cases involving constitutional claims, immigration law, and public corruption. Duties Criminal Division Criminal AUSAs represent the United States in a wide range of federal criminal cases, including violent crimes, firearms violations, corporate, securities, healthcare and investment fraud, counterterrorism, cyber‑enabled crime, human trafficking, public corruption, immigration, and asset forfeiture. Responsibilities span investigation, charging, trial, appeal, and post‑conviction matters, progressing from the General Crimes Section in Brooklyn to any section based on office needs. Appeals Section: Research, write, and edit appellate briefs; post‑conviction responses; argue oral cases; provide real‑time trial assistance to other Criminal Division AUSAs. Asset Recovery Section: Manage criminal and civil asset forfeiture prosecutions, including investigations, seizure warrants, pleadings, motions, trial litigation, and appeals. Civil Division Civil AUSAs represent the United States in civil actions in the U.S. District Court, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The Division handles affirmative practices (Civil Enforcement, Civil Rights, Drug and Listed Chemical Diversion, Health Care Fraud) and defensive litigation for government agencies and employees. Cases involve monetary relief, equitable relief, injunctive relief, and immigration law challenges. Requirements Conditions of employment: U.S. citizenship or national status. Male applicants born after December 31 1959 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service. Federal salary payments via direct deposit. Pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax, drug testing). Ongoing employment requires favorable background investigation. Residency within the district or within 20 miles. Qualifications Required Qualifications: J.D. degree, active bar membership, and at least one year of post‑J.D. legal experience. Preferred Qualifications: Excellent academic record, significant litigation experience, strong communication and analytical skills, sound judgment, and a demonstrated commitment to public service. Prior legal work in a judicial clerkship, law firm, nonprofit, or state/federal government office is advantageous. Benefits Salary: Basic pay range for AD 21 to AD 29 is $87,133 to $195,200 (inclusive of 37.95% locality pay). Other Benefits: Paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework options, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Travel may be required within and beyond the district. Relocation Expenses: Not authorized.
