Project Scientist | Standards and Calibrations for Optical Microscopy
$90k - $100kNCSL International
Overview The Microsystems and Nanotechnology Division of the Physical Measurement Laboratory of NIST seeks a Project Scientist to develop standards and calibrations for optical microscopy, with applications to the localization and placement of quantum emitters. To advance the related state of the art, the project team has developed measurements, simulations, and theory of light–matter interactions involving nanostructured apertures and particles under optical microscopy. The project team is now finalizing aspects of this work for publication. Job Duties Writing code for image analysis to reduce optical micrographs to reliable quantities and meaningful uncertainties Performing simulations of light–matter interactions to inform the design of nanostructured standards and microscopy calibrations Developing theory for error models and uncertainty evaluation in optical microscopy beyond the resolution limit Documenting the results of the preceding duties in manuscripts for publication in scientific journals Performing any remaining experiments for the research project as determined necessary Employment Terms The Project Scientist will be employed by Theiss Research and sited at NIST as an Associate in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This research project is funded through October 2027; therefore, the project team seeks a candidate who can become productive quickly. Compensation and Benefits The expected salary range for this position is from $90,000 to $100,000, based on experience and qualifications. Theiss Research offers a comprehensive benefits package, including employer‑provided health insurance, paid time off, and a retirement savings plan. Required Qualifications Doctorate in Optical Engineering, Optics, Applied Physics, or a similar degree Demonstrated ability to perform research involving light–matter interactions of nanostructures Demonstrated ability to write scientific reports of high clarity, concision, and consistency Experience in optical microscopy of nanostructures with polarization sensitivity Experience with scanning electron microscopy of nanostructures Proficiency in image analysis, uncertainty evaluation, and scientific interpretation Preferred Qualifications Experience performing simulations of light–matter interactions using Ansys Lumerical Experience creating, customizing, and debugging code in MATLAB Familiarity with microscope instrumentation control using LabVIEW and MATLAB U.S. citizenship is preferred, as NIST is committed to a rigorous selection process that prioritizes the appointment of U.S. citizens into research positions: #J-18808-Ljbffr NCSL International
