Flight Intern

Overview Big Bend Community College is seeking Certified Flight Interns (CFI) to support the Academic needs of students in the Aviation Program. CFIs work closely with full‑time and part‑time faculty and report to the Director of Flight Operations. Positions are part‑time, temporary and subject to WAC 357-04-045 limits. Levels CFI Level I – $19.50/hr – responsible for pre‑ and post‑flight briefings, assigned flight schedule, students in stages 1‑3, and general flight line duties. Requires COMM ASEL and CFI‑ASE. CFI Level II – $20.45/hr – responsible for pre‑ and post‑flight briefings, assigned flight schedule, students in stages 1‑7, and general flight line duties. Requires COMM ASEL, CFI‑ASE, and CFI‑IA. CFI Level III – $23.52/hr – responsible for pre‑ and post‑flight briefings, assigned flight schedule, stages 1‑7, Instrument CFI and Multi as needed, and flight line duties. Requires COMM ASEL, CFI‑ASE, CFI‑IA, 4 quarters of CFI experience, and at least 400 hours in FAA 141 teaching. Responsibilities Provide private, commercial, and instrument flight and ground instruction using the flight and ground training syllabus. Maintain student records in accordance with FAA, TSA, VA, and college policies. Support the Director with day‑to‑day operations: copying, scanning documents, relaying messages, returning aircraft to service, and auditing student training folders. Meet with each scheduled student; ensure lessons are completed per the training course outline and that all endorsements are recorded in student flight books. Submit requests for stage checks after completion of each state of flight training and ensure all flight books are up to date before requesting a stage check. Ensure all training activities, flights, and briefings occur during normal business hours. Perform any other duties as assigned. Qualifications Must possess a commercial pilot certificate, single‑engine land (ASEL) with instrument rating, and a current air‑plane instructor certificate (single‑engine). Must hold a current Medical Certificate with no restrictions that prohibit flight or non‑flight duties. Must have successfully completed Big Bend Community College’s Part 141 Flight School, including commercial ASEL and instrument rating. Conditions of Employment Temporary hourly positions are exempt from civil service rules and limited to one appointment. Candidates previously employed by Big Bend Community College in a part‑time hourly or temporary position after July 1, 2022, are not eligible. The role requires a background check, and a valid work authorization must be provided at hire. There is no guarantee of continued employment, and the position does not sponsor H‑1B visas.
