About the Role

The Company is seeking a General Counsel to take the helm of its legal function, with a focus on setting and defending the company's legal strategy in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. The successful candidate will be responsible for all legal matters, including but not limited to, defining the company's positions on web data access, AI training data, and machine-generated output. This role demands a leader who can not only navigate the current legal uncertainties but also actively shape the legal landscape. The General Counsel will be at the forefront of legal decision-making, from corporate governance to commercial and product legal issues, and will be expected to lead a legal team and manage outside counsel effectively. Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company should have a minimum of 12 years' legal experience, with a strong background in both corporate and commercial law. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of running legal in a venture-backed technology company and be adept at handling a wide range of legal issues, including those related to AI, data, and IP. A deep understanding of the legal implications of web data access and AI is essential, as is the ability to provide business-focused legal advice. The role requires a strategic thinker who can operate with a high level of urgency and is not afraid to take on the most challenging and novel legal questions. Membership in a US state bar is required, with a preference for those with a J.D. from a T14 law school and experience in data licensing, privacy, or open-source legal matters.
