Mechanic

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Foreman, performs vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair work; troubleshoots and diagnoses needed vehicle and equipment repairs; performs mechanical repairs to automotive, diesel, and other power-driven equipment by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Performs maintenance and repair of District vehicles, tools, and equipment, including radio communication equipment.
• Performs preventative maintenance program on all vehicles and equipment, including generators, utilizing computer program.
• Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical issues in District vehicles and equipment which are powered by a variety of diesel and gasoline engines.
• Inspects and certifies equipment in accordance with federal and state regulations; maintains all vehicle maintenance related records pertaining to California Highway Patrol safety BIT program.
• Services and repairs hydraulic systems.
• Performs general welding fabrication.
• Orders and receives parts and materials; processes paperwork and invoices.
• Reviews requests for repairs; completes necessary repairs and maintenance; logs completed and pending work in computer system; communicates status of repair to user and/or supervisor.
• Monitors and makes recommendations for off-site repairs to District vehicles.
• Safely and properly disposes of toxic waste produced by vehicle maintenance.
• Responds to emergency calls for assistance.
• Performs other duties assigned.

Typical Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

• A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Successful completion of the District's Assistant Mechanic-in-Training program (or the equivalent) with at least three year of experience working on utility grade equipment and vehicles.
• Must have a valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of appointment.
• Possession of a current OSHA Aerial Inspector certification, or ability to obtain within one year of appointment.
• Considerable knowledge of the use of hand tools, power tools and other equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance, including their designs and uses.
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions, procedure manuals and other work-related documents.
• General computer skills, including Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
• Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
• Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers and subordinates using tact and diplomacy.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands and finger to handle and feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles; hazardous materials; extreme cold; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. The employee has regular work hours; although, overtime is required as necessary, including emergency call-outs.
