Health Information Mgmt Specialist, Onsite (Des Moines, IA)

Employment Type Full time Shift Day Shift Responsibilities Analyze health records for documentation compliance in accordance with regulatory and accreditation requirements and medical staff bylaws, rules, and regulations. Assist with gathering necessary medical record elements for coding and DNFB encounters. Conduct provider suspension activities and provide electronic record support for providers. Perform document imaging functions including indexing, validation, and quality assurance of the master patient index and patient demographic data. Review all discharged inpatient and applicable outpatient records for completeness and assign deficiencies in accordance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. Ensure a complete medical record to support hospital operations, including patient care and revenue cycle activities. Operate computer database systems and data for quality assurance, statistical reporting, and other purposes; retrieve data, prepare and distribute reports. Diagnose and troubleshoot minor system errors and problems. Prepare delinquent chart counts, list of suspended providers, and maintain the suspension file. Collect statistics to support credentialing, regulatory, and accreditation requirements; ensure quality and turnaround times meet established standards. Distribute reports to providers as needed and perform medical record audits to support hospital Quality Department activities. Serve as a resource for providers in the record completion process and for other hospital-authorized personnel. Assist the HIM coding team with identifying deficiencies for coding and DNFB encounters. Maintain knowledge of all policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and accreditation standards regarding legal health records; perform additional duties as requested by management. Minimum Qualifications High School Graduate or GED equivalent. Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or certification‑eligible (preferred); normally achieved by completing two‑year college‑level coursework in an RHIT program. Minimum of two (2) years experience in health information management or comparable physician office, clinic, or hospital business office, customer service/office setting, or applicable college education. Experience with electronic medical records required; previous data analysis experience preferred. Detail‑oriented with knowledge of medical terminology. Proficiency in standard desktop and Windows‑based computer systems, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and the Internet. Ability to use additional software as required to perform essential job functions. Well‑developed communication skills, both written and oral; able to communicate effectively with diverse perspectives. Understanding of escalation of issues and ability to train and educate co‑workers. Excellent organizational skills; able to perform multiple duties related to daily operations of health record completion and provide excellent customer service. Physical and Mental Requirements Must be able to set and organize own work priorities and adapt as they change frequently. Must comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with interruptions and perform detailed tasks. Majority of work time involves using a computer, monitor, and keyboard.
