UTILITY LOCATE TECHNICIAN

Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED required. Associates degree preferred. Two years of experience locating underground utilities, working outdoors in all conditions and confined spaces or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities Proficiency in performance of essential functions and ability to learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Purpose of Classification Perform operational duties related to locating water and sewer mains, services, and appurtenances utilizing electronic locating equipment, blueprints, system maps, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data, including assisting work crews in repairing and flushing water distribution systems and controlling traffic. Essential Functions Utilize electronic locating equipment, blueprints, system maps, and GIS/GPS data to locate water and sewer mains, services, and appurtenances. Assist the Engineering Division with GIS and GPS data acquisition. Access the Utility Protection Center to obtain locate tickets as required. Provide assistance to utility crews in controlling traffic, repairing and flushing water distribution systems, and resolving system locate problems. Read and interpret locate tickets to determine the location area for underground utilities. Complete locate request paperwork as required. Equipment Use: Operate, maneuver, and control equipment, machinery, tools, and materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculate decimals and percentages, handle fractions, compute discount and interest, calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures. Functional Reasoning: Follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions, perform semi-routine standardized work with independent judgment. Situational Reasoning: Exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against measurable criteria.
