Facilities Engineer

Facilities Engineer- 100% Remote

Facilities engineering within government, GOCO, or other controlled-environment contexts, as well as the ability to operate in a client-facing consulting environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, definition, and management of facility design and operational requirements for new government-aligned and industrial facilities, including greenfield projects built from scratch.
• Drive improvements in facility operations, maintenance programs, and real property management to enhance performance and reliability.
• Provide technical recommendations to optimize manufacturing operations, reduce costs, and improve overall operational efficiency.
• Prepare, review, and deliver engineering reports, assessments, and presentations that clearly communicate findings and recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
• Oversee contractor-executed activities such as planning and design, development, maintenance, and real property transition to ensure alignment with project objectives.
• Evaluate contractor performance against cost, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements and recommend corrective actions when needed.
• Apply project management principles to facility-related projects, including planning, estimating, scheduling, and coordinating resources.
• Conduct facility inspections, engineering analyses, and operational studies to identify issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
• Identify operational risks related to facility design, construction, and operations, and develop practical recommendations for mitigation and corrective action.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local real property policies, regulations, easements, permitting requirements, and land-use agreements.
• Coordinate closely with client teams, general contractors, architects, owners, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders to align technical requirements and project execution.
• Support design reviews and construction oversight for new industrial facility construction at Department of Defense installations, typically on multi-year programs.
• Apply expertise in mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, piping, and controls and automation, to support design calculations and system integration.
• Contribute to program management and program coordination activities related to facilities projects, ensuring clear communication and stakeholder alignment.
• Represent the organization in client meetings, program reviews, and technical discussions as a trusted technical advisor.

Essential Skills

• At least 7+ years of experience as a Facilities Engineer, Mechanical Designer, or Mechanical Engineer within a GOCO (Government-Owned, Contractor-Operated) or U.S. Government facility.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, with preference for licensure in Michigan or Ohio.
• Proven experience delivering government, industrial, or manufacturing facility projects from concept through design and construction.
• Hands-on experience performing design calculations and supporting design for mechanical systems such as HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, piping, and controls and automation.
• Demonstrated capability in developing, defining, and managing design requirements for new facilities, including managing those requirements through construction on greenfield projects.
• Experience in engineering consulting or client-facing technical roles, working closely with general contractors, architects, owners, and subcontractors.
• Experience evaluating contractor performance against cost, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements.
• Strong understanding of real property regulations, easements, permitting processes, and land-use agreements.
• Experience with program management, program coordination, and stakeholder management for facility or construction projects.
• Experience in construction, construction management, and design review for new construction projects.
• Proficiency in project management practices including estimating, scheduling, and quality control for facility projects.
• Technical expertise in mechanical engineering and mechanical design engineering for buildings and industrial facilities.
• Experience working under government contracts or within government-regulated environments.
• Ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders in a consulting, client-focused setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license is strongly preferred and considered a bonus qualification.
• Mechanical design experience for buildings, particularly within an architecture and engineering (A+E) firm environment.
• Experience working as a Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Designer in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Familiarity with electrical systems in the context of industrial or manufacturing facilities.
• Experience supporting Department of Defense or other DoD installation projects, especially new industrial facility construction with 2–3 year durations.
• Strong skills in subcontractor management and general contractor coordination.
• Ability to prepare and deliver clear, concise engineering reports and technical presentations to diverse audiences.
• Comfort working in a collaborative, client-focused consulting environment with defense and aerospace clients.
• Motivation to have a direct impact on facility performance and operational efficiency across complex programs.

Work Environment

The role supports multiple Department of Defense projects focused on new industrial facility construction at DoD installations, typically with 2–3 year project durations. The position is open to remote candidates. For those local to the primary office, the typical arrangement is approximately 75% office-based work and 25% travel. Travel is to client job sites across the United States and may be short-term or long-term, so candidates should be comfortable with a flexible travel schedule. When traveling, a per diem at the applicable GSA rate covers lodging and meals/incidentals. The average workweek is approximately 45 hours, with the possibility of working up to 60 hours during peak periods. Standard hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some flexibility to accommodate project and client needs. You will work closely with project managers and other facilities engineers in a collaborative, consulting-oriented environment that emphasizes client service, technical excellence, and direct impact on facility performance and operational efficiency.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $57.00 - $67.31/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
