Assistant Professor (Latinx Politics/ Communities) Dept. of Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies, School of Arts & Sciences Hunter College, New York City, NY Type: Full-Time Category: Political Science; Ethnic and Multicultural Studies Job ID: 31142 Location: Hunter College FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Hunter College Department of Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies offers students a critical understanding of the political, cultural, social, and ideological forces that have shaped the experiences of people of African, Puerto Rican, and Latinx diasporas. The department has both teaching and research missions. This position is for an assistant professor specializing in Latinx politics, including electoral, judicial, and cultural politics. Candidates with expertise in the sociology of Latinx communities are encouraged to apply. We seek a scholar with an interdisciplinary research profile and an ability to engage with Latinx Studies broadly. Expertise in one or more areas: Latinx social movements, racial capitalism, political economy, urban politics, public policy, gender/sexuality, migration/diaspora, environmental justice, carcerality/policing, media/culture, arts/politics. The position will begin in the Fall 2027 semester. RESPONSIBILITIES Evidence of a strong research agenda (peer‑reviewed publications/working pipeline) that connects meaningfully to Latinx Studies and either Sociology and/or Political Science. Demonstrated ability to teach introductory and upper‑division courses in Africana, Puerto Rican, and Latino Studies, and to contribute to cross‑listed offerings with Political Science and Sociology. Clear commitment to student‑centered pedagogy, inclusive classroom practice, and mentoring (including first‑generation students). Capacity to engage in multiple methods or clearly articulated methodological strengths (qualitative, archival, ethnographic, quantitative, theory, etc.). Track record (or strong plan) for departmental/program service and collaboration across units. Commitment to work in culturally diverse and urban education settings and active engagement with students and the community. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should have earned a Ph.D. in Political Science or Sociology (or a related field such as American Studies or Latinx Studies) with a specialization in Latinx politics and communities. Experience should include demonstrated pedagogical success, scholarship or achievement, and ability to collaborate effectively within the institution. We are particularly interested in applicants who can teach introductory and advanced level interdisciplinary courses. COMPENSATION Compensation is commensurate with experience within the range of $90,838–$109,025. CUNY offers a competitive benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. Mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication are also provided. CUNY is implementing salary schedule increases.
