Advising Dean - College of Arts & Sciences - Academic Advising Associate II

The Advising Dean is one of eleven academic Advising Deans in Arts & Sciences Student Services that serves over 4,800 undergraduate students of richly diverse backgrounds and academic interests that span over 40 distinct majors. The Advising Deans are highly collaborative and supportive of each other, and the successful candidate will relish a fast-paced environment with a close-knit team. Advising Deans provide personalized advising to cohorts of approximately 480 students and collectively support upwards of 550 faculty members in their roles as advisors. This Advising Dean will provide developmental advising to undergraduates to ensure their academic, personal, and professional success, as well as develop and implement activities and programs designed to contribute to a sense of belonging and community among students with diverse cultural, economic, and geographic backgrounds. The Advising Dean’s program responsibilities will be determined in consultation with the Advising Team and the Director of Advising.

Arts & Sciences Advising works closely with the college’s Admissions, Career Development, and Registrar/Operations teams to facilitate a smooth transition into Cornell and a successful path to graduation and post-Cornell career for all our students. This position works collaboratively with staff across many student services offices on campus, such as Cornell Health, Dean of Students, Student Disability Services, Athletics, Residence Life, Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives, Global Learning, Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Financial Aid.

This position reports to the Director of Advising. The Advising Dean’s duties include advising and programmatic responsibilities, including the management of a full cohort of approximately 480 students. All Advising Deans lead at least one advising program, often working with faculty directors. Program duties will be determined based on the background, experiences, and interests of the successful candidate, as well as the needs of the A&S Advising Team. The position’s schedule will be four days per week in-person and one day remote, with additional flexibility during summer and Cornell breaks.

Required Qualifications: Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree combined with 2-4 years academic advising experience or equivalent combination. You must have a high regard for arts and sciences disciplines, as well as a thorough understanding of the career and lifetime benefits of a liberal arts education. Candidates must possess the capacity to be an effective team player, set objectives, and contribute to strategies that meet goals consistent with the mission of the College of Arts & Sciences Advising Office and the University. We seek a professional who has demonstrated the ability to develop and implement inclusive programming to support the success of a diverse student body, including transfer students, students of color, students of all backgrounds and income levels, first-generation college students, international students, LGBTQ+ students, and students with disabilities. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively and respectfully on a wide range of sensitive matters with students and families of all backgrounds. Strong organizational skills and exceptional written and oral communication skills are an absolute requirement for this position. Candidates must be committed to providing excellent service to students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff with a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and judgment. Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable with learning new software programs and student engagement platforms. Candidates will be expected to work some evenings and weekends, but work-related travel will be limited.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in liberal arts or student personnel, counseling, education, or related area preferred. Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin or Korean is a plus, but not necessary.
