The Public Safety Communications (PSC), Radio Communications Branch, Client Engineering Divisions are responsible for a wide array of engineering activities and services related to the PSC systems engineering and design for public safety agencies of the State of California. Under direction of a Senior Telecommunications Engineer, the position ensures engineering services for PSC meet the critical operational requirements of the state.

Associate Telecommunications Engineer

The Public Safety Communications (PSC), Radio Communications Branch, Client Engineering Divisions are responsible for a wide array of engineering activities and services related to the PSC systems engineering and design for public safety agencies of the State of California. Under direction of a Senior Telecommunications Engineer, the position ensures engineering services for PSC meet the critical operational requirements of the state.

Assistant Telecommunications Engineer
Public Safety Communications (PSC), Client Engineering Division, Statewide Interoperability unit, also known as the California Radio Interoperable System or CRIS unit, is responsible for a wide array of engineering activities and services related to the public safety communications systems engineering and design for public safety agencies, including both State and non-State entities, operating within the State of California.

Under the supervision of the Senior Telecommunications Engineer, the Assistant Telecommunications Engineer provides direction to maintenance technical staff for the installation and maintenance of new systems, and solutions to problems with existing systems. In large system implementations of average difficulty, the incumbent assists engineering lead persons. The incumbent performs duties of increasing responsibility such as developing technical reports and equipment selection criteria; providing project cost estimates for parts and labor; and notifying the supervisor of risks to the project’s budget, schedule, and scope. Additionally, the incumbent ensures engineering services for public safety communications meet the critical operational requirements of the state.

This position may be rotated within the Client Engineering Division or the Microwave Engineering Division based on factors that include cross-training and workload management.

This position may be rotated within the Client Engineering Division or the Microwave Engineering Division based on factors that include cross-training and workload management.

Working Conditions

Hybrid Telework : This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. Additional in office days may be required based on the business need.

DMV Pull Program : Participation in the DMV Pull Program is required. The position(s) require(s) a valid Driver’s License (DL). You must answer the questions addressing your DL on your application. Ensure you provide your DL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Associate Telecommunications Engineer
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Three or more years of experience designing or developing Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems, including RF subsystems such as antennas, filters, combiners, and site configuration.
• Three or more years of experience performing RF system design, propagation modeling, FCC licensing, field survey reporting, and system performance testing.
• One or more years of hands-on operation of advanced RF test equipment, such as Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, Oscilloscope, or similar tools
• One or more years of practical experience with IP networking and architecture, preferably in a Motorola ASTRO 25 environment or similar P25 core network.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to produce design plans, engineering reports, test documentation, training material, and PowerPoint briefings for internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently, lead small technical efforts, and provide guidance to junior engineering staff.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex RF, networking, and system integration issues.

Optional / Preferred Certifications

• CCNA, Network+, or advanced networking certifications.
• P25 Radio System Fundamentals, P25 Trunking, or Motorola ASTRO 25 System Architecture training.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
