Emergency Department Nurse

General Information

Location: Puyallup, WA

Facility: Level III Trauma Center with 375 licensed beds, including a 46-bed Emergency Department (ED) with specialized safe psychiatric rooms and fast-track capabilities.

Average Patient Volume: Approximately 200 patients per day

Patient Demographics

The Emergency Department serves a diverse patient population ranging from pediatric to geriatric patients, covering various emergency and critical conditions including:

• Trauma
• Gunshot Wounds (GSW)
• Sepsis
• COVID-19
• STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction)
• Stroke
• Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Mental Health Issues
• Respiratory Issues
• High Acuity Medical Cases

Note: Invasive neurosurgical procedures such as craniotomies are not performed in this facility, and pediatric cases are typically transferred to specialized centers.

Patient Ratios

Daytime nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4-5, with flexibility based on patient acuity and staffing needs.

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Course)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• CPI/MOAB (Crisis Prevention Institute/Management of Aggressive Behavior)

Skills Required

• General Emergency Department experience
• Proficient in cardiac rhythm interpretation
• IV insertion skills
• Basic knowledge of medication administration and drips
• Experience in procedural sedation and blood administration
• Preferred experience in TNK (Tissue Plasminogen Activator) administration and cardiac medications
• Recent experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Unit Support

The Emergency Department is supported by:

• ER Technicians performing glucose checks and assisting with procedures
• Resource/Float Nurse available for support
• Respiratory Therapists available 24/7
• ED Educator for ongoing training and development
• Security personnel on-site 24/7 for enhanced safety
• House Supervisors overseeing operations 24/7
• Social Work Services and Pharmacy support available around the clock

Charting System and Equipment

• Primary EHR System: EPIC (recent experience required)
• Included Equipment: Alaris infusion pumps, Pyxis medication management system
• Telemetry monitoring at central and bedside locations

Orientation Process

Orientation consists of:

• Day 1: New Employee Orientation (NEO), including badge issuance and EPIC training as needed, followed by shadowing in mental health and front desk areas
• Day 2: 12-hour shift with a preceptor on assigned shift

Travelers are required to pass a telemetry competency assessment prior to starting.

Scheduling Information

Shifts include:

• Days/Mids: 0700, 1100
• Mids/Nights: 1500, 1900

The scheduler is considerate of individual needs and provides schedules three weeks in advance, typically ten days prior to the start date. Weekend shifts will vary based on unit needs.
