Non-Career Part-Time/Seasonal Lifeguard

The City of Sacramento is seeking candidates for a Non-Career Part-Time/Seasonal Lifeguard position. This role involves performing regular lifeguard duties and assisting in the supervision of pool staff in organizing and instructing aquatics classes and activities. The incumbent will assume full responsibility of the aquatic facility in the absence of an Assistant Pool Manager or Pool Manager.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed:

• Maintain constant surveillance to safeguard swimmers from drowning and other accidents.
• Rescue and resuscitate drowning persons.
• Rescue and aid persons affected by life-threatening injuries.
• Render care in the latest American Red Cross techniques in water safety, lifeguarding, first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (C.P.R.) to persons in need of assistance.
• Direct, instruct, and assist in the supervision of water-oriented classes such as swim lessons, swim team, junior guard, and water aerobics.
• Enforce facility rules, regulations, and procedures; take appropriate action to prevent dangerous situations and accidents.
• Assist in the maintenance of the aquatic facility including its building, grounds, and equipment.
• Write and prepare lesson plans, assist in the planning, promoting, and organizing of aquatic programs.
• Maintain records and reports.
• Perform the duties of the Pool Manager in their absence.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of current and preventative lifeguarding techniques, rules and regulations of an aquatic facility, swimming rescue techniques, C.P.R., and first aid, instruction techniques and materials related to aquatic activities, swimming pool maintenance, and the chemicals, equipment, and techniques used to meet State and County Department of Health standards, aquatic instruction programs, and principles and practices of supervision.

Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance, prevent accidents and effect rescues, enforce the rules and regulations of an aquatic facility, perform swimming rescues, C.P.R., and first aid, instruct students in a variety of aquatic-oriented skill level classes, establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public, follow oral and written instructions, prepare, read, and write various reports, interpret policies and procedures.

Education: None required. Experience: One season or 2.5 months of experience at an aquatic facility as a lifeguard or swim instructor. Special Qualifications: Age: Must be 16 years of age at time of appointment. Certification: Possession of a current course completion certificate as required by current Federal, State, and Local law. Proof of certification and/or license should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Assessments: If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a physical, criminal background check, and drug test. Must successfully complete and pass a tuberculosis screening test. Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series is desirable. Training: This position is designated as a Mandatory Reporter; completion of Mandatory Reporter training is required within two weeks of appointment.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions: The conditions herein are typically required of an incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to walk, start, and stop frequently; run and swim frequently; perform simple and power grasping; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with participants and staff; visual acuity to read and record documents and make observations. Must be able to spend prolonged periods of time in pool water; must maintain the physical ability required to pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification; intermittently, lift, carry or move equipment of 20 pounds or less. Environmental Conditions: Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, and pollens and pool chemicals. Work Conditions: This position requires work to be performed various hours including early morning, day, evenings, and weekends.
