Pioneer Staff Contributor - Student

General Description Student will assist the Pioneer Editor/Advisor and team in regular publication of the student newspaper and affiliated media by contributing content and skills. This could include writing, photography, proofreading, translation, etc. Responsibilities Contribute content for news articles, interviews, event previews, podcasts, and/or feature stories for the Pioneer newspaper and online presence. Attend news conferences and/or relevant OCCC events; take notes and incorporate information into applicable media outlet. Use AP style correctly, employ proper grammar, and ensure information reported is factual. Interview story sources and accurately transcribe content for media coverage. Take photos for media outlets, as needed. Eligibility and Requirements Current OCCC student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours for the Fall or Spring semester or enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours for the Summer semester, or current OCCC student with a Federal Work Study award; and successful completion of English Composition II and/or recommendation from a professor. Transcript can be unofficial or proof of enrollment in news writing or successful completion of Comp II. Must attach a document listing any skills to be used as a Pioneer contributor (e.g., writing, photography, videography, podcast, web design, social media). Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Good communication skills. Good human relations skills. Ability to type. Some knowledge of computers. Self‑motivation. Punctuality, detail orientation, and ability to meet deadlines. Physical Demands / Working Conditions Position involves sedentary work with occasional movement on campus and lifting up to 10 pounds. Must frequently move, communicate, operate a computer and other office machinery, and be able to judge, observe, and assess accuracy and attention to detail. Work is primarily indoor, classroom, or office setting; occasional outdoor events may be included. Policy & Procedures Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures. Contribute to a safe educational & working environment. Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for injury and illness prevention. Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established procedures. Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter‑in‑place drills, and be prepared to assist others in emergencies.
