Job Title: Safety Coordinator
Job Location: Utica, NY
Base Salary: $75K-$100K
Requirements: 3+ Years of Safety experience on Heavy Civil Projects. 

Position Overview:
The Safety Coordinator will support and advance the safety program across heavy civil construction projects, including ROW, utilities, water, pipeline, excavation, earthwork, and grading. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and company safety standards, conducting site inspections, delivering training, and promoting a proactive safety culture to minimize incidents and support project delivery on schedule and within budget.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct regular site safety inspections and audits across heavy civil construction projects (ROW, utilities, water, pipeline, excavation, earthwork, grading) to identify hazards and verify compliance with safety policies and regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific safety plans, procedures, and permits (e.g., confined space, hot work, excavation, traffic control).
  • Deliver safety training and toolbox talks for field crews and subcontractors, including OSHA requirements, hazard communication, PPE use, and task-specific best practices.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and OSHA-recordable events; prepare incident reports, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans to prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and regulatory bodies to address safety concerns and close out corrective actions promptly.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure company policies and project practices remain compliant with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, including training records, inspection reports, permits, incident logs, and regulatory filings.
  • Lead safety meetings and participate in pre-job planning to incorporate hazard mitigation into project execution.
  • Promote a positive safety culture by coaching field personnel, enforcing safety standards, and recognizing safe behavior.
  • Support emergency response planning and drills, and act as a site safety point of contact during incidents.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in safety roles supporting heavy civil construction, utilities, pipeline, water, or similar environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with ROW operations, excavation, trenching, earthwork, grading, and pipeline construction safety practices.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour Construction, First Aid/CPR, HAZWOPER awareness, and confined space entry are required; CSP, ASP, CHST, or similar certifications are a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA construction standards, DOT regulations, and industry best practices for heavy civil and utility projects.
  • Proven experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for delivering training and engaging with field crews and management.
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, permits, and technical specifications related to construction safety.
  • Proficient with safety management systems, inspection tools, and Microsoft Office; experience with incident tracking software is preferred.
  • Valid drivers license and willingness to travel to multiple project sites; ability to work in field conditions and wear appropriate PPE.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to hazard recognition and risk mitigation.
