Overview Special Agent (Lateral) Intelligence Operations Division (IOD) – United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. Only U.S. citizens who are current law enforcement and have successfully passed the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or equivalent training program from the FBI, DEA, or U.S. Postal Inspection Service are eligible. Current USCP employees are not eligible. Responsibilities Perform a full range of investigative functions, including planning, organizing, fact‑finding, and reporting on cases ranging from routine to highly complex. Conduct protective intelligence operations, coordinate investigative and operational efforts with sworn law enforcement officers and partner agency officials, and conduct surveillance and counter‑surveillance operations. Serve legal processes, including arrest and search warrants, and work with judicial officials for prosecution. Assist in the protection of congressional leadership, including domestic and international travel, through on‑ground protective intelligence operations. Conduct vulnerability assessments to support congressional protection and provide protective coverage for congressional events. Lead counter‑terrorism, suspicious activity, counter‑intelligence, and cyber threat investigations in accordance with D.C. Code and Title 18 of the U.S. Code (2 USC §1966(a) & (f)). Requirements Must obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance. Complete the FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or equivalent program from the FBI, DEA, or U.S. Postal Inspection Service; provide certificate or transcript. Current law enforcement officer with at least 9 months of experience after training (eligible for appointment) and at least 52 weeks at time of appointment; must be employed outside of USCP. U.S. citizenship; must provide proof of citizenship early in the selection process. Age: Minimum 21 years, maximum 39 years (or 40 if turning 40 in the same month of appointment). Must meet retirement requirements by age 59. Valid REAL ID U.S. driver's license with no revocation or suspension in the past year. Valid firearm possession; applicants with prior misdemeanor domestic violence convictions are ineligible. Pass comprehensive criminal, credit, and background investigations; complete full field background investigation, polygraph, medical, and psychological examinations. Complete 5‑week USCP Basic Investigations Training Program (BITP) for retention. Must meet federal law enforcement personnel timelines for retirement and service. Qualifications Successful completion of FLETC CITP or equivalent training program. 9 months of post‑training law enforcement experience; 52 weeks at appointment. Licensed firearm proficiency and ability to carry on duty. Experience conducting counter‑terrorism, counter‑intelligence, cyber threat investigations, and protective intelligence operations. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Additional Information Competitive starting salary $90,853 with opportunities for overtime. Recruitment bonus of $5,000 upon appointment and another $5,000 upon completion of 18 months of service, subject to a two‑year service agreement.
