Department BSD PED - Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation - Case Management About The Department The Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at Comer Children's Hospital, part of University of Chicago Medicine, provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with malignant and non‑malignant hematologic conditions. The program includes a specialized Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy program offering advanced transplant and immunotherapy treatments for patients with high-risk and complex diseases. Across all services, care is delivered through a collaborative, team‑based model that integrates physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, research staff, and supportive care specialists. The Section is deeply engaged in clinical research and offers access to innovative therapies and clinical trials, ensuring patients receive cutting‑edge treatment options. Job Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) supports the clinical, operational, and programmatic needs of the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology programs and is responsible for the comprehensive management of patients with neuro‑oncologic and hematologic/oncologic conditions, ensuring high‑quality, coordinated care across the continuum. The APP provides direct patient care, including assessment, treatment management, and longitudinal follow‑up, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimize clinical outcomes. Responsibilities include supporting care delivery across multiple sites, participating in program development and clinical initiatives, and contributing to the advancement of care models within the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation. This position also supports clinical operations, protocol implementation, and quality improvement efforts. The APP works closely with physicians, nursing, and administrative teams to enhance patient access, streamline care processes, and ensure compliance with institutional standards. Responsibilities Provide a model of care that is shaped by theory, expanded by science, research and reflective practice and is identified by a holistic and comprehensive approach to the patients. Take histories, perform physical examinations, formulate a differential diagnosis and plan for selected patients seen by the ambulatory Pediatric Neuro‑oncology and Hematology/Oncology teams. Responsible for writing and obtaining treatment consent and applying BEACON plan. Help arrange diagnostic tests, follow‑up on tests, pertinent laboratory and imaging studies, and other patient care issues. Maintain effective communication with subspecialists and the inpatient team. Provide ongoing education to patients and families regarding chemotherapy, complications, side effects, etc. Triage patient calls, formulate a plan of care and document in EPIC. Communicate with the inpatient team prior to admission and primary care provider. Staff clinics as assigned; attend multidisciplinary conferences of assigned disease area. As part of duties, perform reporting for government agencies, chart review, refill prescriptions, and answer phone calls for patients for whom the APP is involved with longitudinal care. Attend conferences, relevant workshops, seminars locally and nationally and continuing education courses to keep abreast of updates in the management of hematology/oncology patients. Assumes responsibility for maintaining own competency and continuing education in area of specialization and in professional practice. Perform procedures including bone marrow biopsy, suture removal, skin biopsy, administration of chemotherapy via intrathecal and ommaya reservoir routes, diagnostic lumbar puncture and ommaya reservoir taps. Complies with standards and regulations of licensure, regulatory, and accrediting agencies. Assists in evaluating the quality of patient care through application of the quality assurance process. Participates in independent and/or collaborative research projects. Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit‑versus‑burden, safety, quality, and cost‑effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization. Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care. Performs other related work as needed. Education Minimum Qualifications Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college. Work Experience Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois Preferred Qualifications Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program. Experience Background in research. Research nurse experience or transplant coordinator experience. At least 1 year of inpatient experience in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Critical care nursing experience. Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Provider Current RN Illinois License and the ability to obtain an advanced practice nurse (APN) license by start date. National certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Once licensed, apply for a mid‑level practitioner‑controlled license and DEA number. Pediatric Advanced Life Support - PALS. Basic Life Support - BLS. Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date. Once licensed, apply for a mid‑level practitioner‑controlled license and DEA number. Pediatric Advanced Life Support - PALS. ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Basic Life Support - BLS. Preferred Competencies Demonstrated clinical competency. Knowledge of electronic medical records. The ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse setting. Ability to handle and relate sensitive information. Ability to troubleshoot problems regularly. Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
