About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Duration: 26 Weeks Shift: 12H Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Active Illinois RN License Certifications: BLS required, ACLS recommended Must-Have: EKG interpretation skills Medication titration experience Basic nursing skills RN licensure BLS certification Description: The Cardio Thoracic Unit cares for a variety of patients, including those with myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and those undergoing lung surgeries. Registered Nurses are expected to provide safe and effective care, managing patient ratios of 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Nurses will successfully interpret EKG readings and titrate medications such as Cardizem and heparin. There is a charge nurse available at all times, and house supervisors on duty 24/7. Patient care technicians assist on the unit with ratios of 1:8-9 days, 1:9-10 evenings, and 1:10-12 nights. Registered Nurses are required to troubleshoot equipment such as CPAP and BiPAP, primarily for home regimens, and manage heated high flow oxygen during specific circumstances. Telemetry technicians are available, but nurses must be proficient in reading and interpreting their own EKG strips. Shifts are scheduled for every other weekend and involve rotation for holiday coverage. Registered Nurses may float to other general medical units as needed. Dress code permits any color scrubs except those with children's or cartoon prints, given the adult patient population. A unit-specific orientation is provided, tailored to the needs of the clinician.
