You will work in a unit with 63 beds, including private and observation beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 4-5 patients per RN during the day shift and 5-6 patients per RN during the night shift. The common diagnoses for patients include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, and overflow medical cases. Responsibilities include dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, and managing drains, NG tubes, and central lines. RNs are not required to titrate drips, with the exception of Heparin. Each shift will have a Charge Nurse who does not take an assignment, ensuring support is always available. House supervisors are available 24/7. Patient care technicians are present, assisting with vital signs, accu checks, and activities of daily living. Respiratory therapists manage nebulizer treatments, while RNs oversee inhalers and can place patients on CPAP as needed. Telemetry monitoring is present, with monitor techs managing strip readings at a central station. Shifts are scheduled from 0700-1930 for days and 1930-0730 for nights. Weekend work is required every other weekend, and holiday rotations are mandatory. Travelers may be the first to float to other units with the same level of experience. Scrubs of any color are permitted. Orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor, followed by one shift for professional orientation.
