Powell's Books is seeking an experienced facilities leader to oversee maintenance, vendor partnerships, and projects across our diverse mix of stores and buildings. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for keeping our facilities safe, functional, and well maintained while leading a team dedicated to supporting the day-to-day needs of the business.

Pay: $53K - $94K per year, depending on experience.


Schedule: Would generally be Monday through Friday, business hours; may vary based on occasional business need

Position Summary:

The Senior Facilities Manager is responsible for the overall performance, reliability, and continuous improvement of Facilities operations and supply purchasing across all company locations. They oversee all maintenance and facilities services to ensure safe, functional, and reliable environments for operations. This position is accountable for setting Facilities priorities, managing vendor relationships, and leading projects that maintain and improve company infrastructure. The Senior Facilities Manager partners with senior leadership to align facilities capabilities and requirements with business needs, while remaining hands-on in execution when required. This role leads the Facilities team and serves as the primary point of accountability for Facilities outcomes, while collaborating cross-functionally to deliver consistent, high-quality results. Reports to Director of Retail Operations.

Essential Functions:

• Oversees all day-to-day Facilities operations across locations, ensuring high standards of maintenance, responsiveness, and service.
• Establishes priorities for maintenance, repair, and facilities work based on operational needs and business impact.
• Ensures consistent execution of preventative maintenance programs and facilities standards.
• Acts as an escalation point for complex or high-impact facilities issues and ensure timely resolution.
• Participates in selection and hiring of Facilities personnel; leads, coaches, and develops Facilities staff, including performance management, performance appraisals, and skills training.
• Sets clear expectations for productivity, quality, and safety; fosters a high-performing, solutions-oriented team environment grounded in accountability and continuous improvement.
• Oversees relationships with external vendors and service providers, including selection, negotiation, and ongoing evaluation.
• Leads bid processes for facilities services and projects; recommends vendor selection and manages contract execution.
• Determines appropriate balance of internal vs. external resources to optimize cost, efficiency, and quality.
• Plans and leads facilities-related projects, including repairs, upgrades, and small-scale capital improvements.
• Partners with senior leadership on medium and larger capital projects, contributing to planning, budgeting, and execution.
• Ensures projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with company standards.
• Identifies and helps prioritize capital needs; provides recommendations and supporting analysis for investment decisions.
• Monitors spending and adjusts plans to meet financial and operational goals; accountable for cost control and resource allocation.
• Owns Facilities-related safety practices and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Identifies and mitigates operational risks related to facilities, equipment, and physical environments.
• Partners with HR and Safety teams to address incidents, improve protocols, and maintain a safe workplace.
• Evaluates Facilities operations to identify inefficiencies and implement scalable improvements.
• Collaborates with location managers and internal stakeholders to align Facilities priorities with business needs.
• Communicates clearly on project status, timelines, and trade-offs.
• Serve as the primary liaison between Facilities and the broader organization.
• Coordinates and participates in 24 hour response and on-call rotations; and provides leadership during facilities-related emergencies.
• Ensures preparedness and clear protocols for incident response.

Requirements / Qualifications:

• Significant experience in facilities management, building systems, or related trades.
• Demonstrated success leading teams and managing performance.
• Strong experience managing vendors, contracts, bid processes, and service agreements.
• Experience managing budgets and balancing cost, quality, and efficiency.
• Proven ability to lead projects and drive results across multiple priorities.
• Strong operational and strategic thinking skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to operate independently with sound judgment and accountability.
• Proficiency with systems and tools used to manage facilities operations.
• Absolute ability to maintain confidential information.
• Valid OR/WA driver's license and acceptable driving record.
