Registered Dietician

Purpose and Scope A Registered Dietitian in training with less than one year of clinical experience will work directly with a qualified renal dietitian under direct supervision. The role provides nutritional services for in‑center and home dialysis patients to gain the experience required by CMS until the year of clinical experience is completed to become a qualified dietitian. The dietitian in training will actively participate in process improvements to enhance patients’ likelihood of achieving individualized, physician‑determined goals. The position does not qualify to complete patient assessments, develop plans of care, or take responsibility for QAPI program review. Under supervision of a company Registered Dietitian with a minimum of three years’ experience as a renal dietitian, the employee supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP). Principal Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for driving the company culture through values and customer service standards, accountable for outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers. Develops and maintains effective relationships through timely communication. Initiates action to respond, resolve and follow up regarding customer service issues promptly. Calculates diet prescription according to standards of practice and evaluates patients’ knowledge of diet and kidney disease. Completes Nutrition History forms for CMS‑qualified dietitians to complete assessments. Provides patient‑specific education to patients, family or caregivers regarding nutritional status, adequacy measures, fluid status, and all nutrition‑related laboratory parameters, considering learning styles and preferences. Reviews nutrition‑related lab results, counsels patient or caregiver, and formulates appropriate actions to assist patients in achieving and sustaining effective nutritional status. Communicates lab results and recommended treatment changes to interdisciplinary teams and providers as appropriate, including physicians and nursing facility staff. Monitors adherence and response to nutrition therapy, addressing issues impacting patients’ ability to achieve goals. Reviews each patient’s albumin level and body weight at least monthly, identifies malnourished patients or those at risk, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to determine interventions, resources or solutions. Involves patient, family, or caregiver in improvement goals. Identifies candidates to refer to physicians for nutritional supplements per disease‑management agreements. Assists with fluid and volume management of patients and provides fluid and sodium education. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team on management and recommendations for mineral metabolism, renal bone disease, anemia, iron status, psychosocial status, vascular access, modality, rehabilitation status, and sodium/volume control. Participates in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement and Plan of Care meetings with a CMS‑qualified dietitian, attends all other pertinent staff meetings, collaborates with interdisciplinary team to maintain safe and clean work areas, engages in pharmacy‑related responsibilities (setup, enrollment, and management), participates in lobby days, educates patients on emergency preparedness related to food and nutrition, conducts staff in‑services as needed, adheres to FMCNA algorithm and medical record policies, maintains dietetic registration, and continues education in accordance with the American Dietetic Association and state licensure regulations. Performs other nutrition services duties and escalates issues to the supervisor as needed. Assists with various projects and performs any related duties as assigned. Physical Demands and Working Conditions The job includes typical healthcare facility environmental characteristics, controlled air temperature, moderate noise levels, exposure to infectious and contagious diseases or materials, desk and personal computer work, and interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians. Travel may be required between assigned facilities and various community locations, including training clinics, regional, business unit, and corporate meetings. Supervision None Education and Required Credentials Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition or a directly related field; Master’s degree preferred. Registered Dietitian per Commission on Dietetic Registration and current state licensure if applicable. Experience and Skills Less than one year’s clinical experience.
