Fiber Technician II

Job Summary As a Fiber Technician, you'll handle everything from installation and splicing to termination and testing. This is a travel‑intensive role, with deployments lasting up to 8 weeks. We provide paid travel and lodging, plus a $50 daily meal allowance. Job Duties and Responsibilities Cabling & Termination Basic copper termination skills Install work‑area outlets, modular furniture, and wall jacks (CAT 3 & CAT 5); mount faceplates and surface‑mount boxes per IES labeling standards Build closets: backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optics, and hardware Ground racks, equipment, and cable as required Complete IDC connections (e.g., 110/66 blocks, patch panels) Perform testing: continuity, use volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable Install fiber connectors (LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, MPO/MTP) for multi‑mode and single‑mode fiber Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords; breakout outside plant fiber (loose tube) such as Corning/Commscope and 3DNX Terminate indoor tight‑buffered multimode and single‑mode fiber; install fan‑out kits with buffer tube Calculate end‑to‑end loss budgets per TIA/EIA standards for multimode and single‑mode Complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, job blog, tool transfers) Complete any other duties as assigned Testing Test using OTDR and Fluke DTX 180 Troubleshoot with OTDR to identify and correct problems end‑to‑end Network‑wide Splicing Perform mechanical splicing for all fiber cable types Perform fusion splicing for all fiber cable types Execute building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct‑buried splices Physical and Mental Requirements The Fiber Technician must be self‑motivated, positive, and professional, creating, developing, and implementing project process improvements. They must promote company culture, be proficient with listed tools, and serve as a liaison with customer representatives. Problem‑solving, critical thinking, reading, writing, and oral presentation skills are required. Ability to work at heights, off a ladder, in confined spaces, lift up to 50 lbs, move up to 75 lbs, see and distinguish colors, read small print, and hear audible signals such as dial tones. Must travel within the branch or regional territory as needed. Regular attendance is mandatory. Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements High School diploma or GED equivalent Proficiency with listed tools (screwdrivers, drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, pliers, hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight and gloves, punch tool, combo crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX) Proficiency terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat‑cure) Testing & troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems experience (OTDR & PMLS) Ability to meet IES driving standards policy Prefer 3–5 years of fiber experience; industry certifications (Corning/FOA) Prefer data center installation experience; mechanical and fusion splice experience; OSP / confined space entry experience (splicing) Own truck, van or SUV; valid driver’s license and good driving record Career Path Lead Communications Technician.
