Controls Technician III

Job Details Location: This Controls Technician III will support two state-of-the-art Distribution Centers, one in Corona, CA and one in Fontana, CA. Shift: The role requires flexibility between 1st and 2nd shift for the first 6‑9 months, ultimately on 2nd shift, working Sunday‑Thursday 2 pm until completion. Flexibility is needed to meet business needs. This role supports AmerisourceBergen, which offers supply‑chain services to healthcare providers and health systems in the United States. Under the general supervision of the Systems Manager, the technician is responsible for supporting the effective use and functionality of automated equipment within a fully automated Distribution Center. Responsibilities include complete controls system design, operation, assembly, repair, programming, and diagnostics of MHE controls systems. The position creates complete controls systems for small to medium‑size automated MHE systems, installing PLC controllers, remote I/O modules, and digital/analog input‑output devices for equipment such as tote cleaners. Additional duties include design of equipment using high‑speed counters, encoders, proximity sensors, frequency drives, and servos. The technician may lead other maintenance team members. This position is categorized as compliance‑critical and requires ensuring continual compliance with all division, corporate, and regulatory requirements. Ensures effective preventative maintenance plans and schedules for all facility equipment and systems. Diagnoses Materials Handling Equipment and Automated Picking System‑related error conditions occurring in the Distribution Center and repairs appropriately. Oversees any maintenance, modifications, and/or system upgrades of Materials Handling Equipment and Automated Picking System controls. Assesses the efficiency of materials handling equipment and automated picking systems and defines necessary modifications. Performs routine preventive maintenance tasks to ensure continued productivity with warehouse operations. Maintains CMMS/EAM system on repairs required and performed on equipment in the Distribution Center. Manages the inventory of spare parts. Must be willing to work extended hours, as needed, to meet productivity goals. Performs related duties as assigned. Education BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Facilities / Plant Management preferred; requires some technical vocational training, or equivalent combination of experience and education. Work Experience Normally requires a minimum of two (4) years of related and progressively responsible experience; strong electrical background preferred. Experience in developing preventive maintenance programs, disaster planning, and knowledge of diesel‑powered backup generators, electric and diesel fire pumps, air‑handling units, and rooftop air‑conditioning units. Skills And Knowledge Strong technical and operational knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment and systems; aptitude for repair and maintenance activities. Ability to read and interpret CAD layouts, illustrated parts breakdown (IPB) diagrams, and electrical circuitry diagrams and drawings. Ability to diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical issues, including testing, replacement or repair of electrical systems (three‑phase or single‑phase up to 600 V), AC or DC motors, power supplies, frequency drives, servo drives, transformers, motor starters, proximity sensors, encoders, photoeyes, PLCs, HMI devices, and PLC inputs/outputs. Capability to make custom drawings, schematics, designs, cost estimates, and project management for control systems. Create, assemble, program, and diagnose MHE controls systems, designed for small to medium‑size automated MHE systems, including PLC installation, remote I/O modules, digital/analog inputs/outputs, high‑speed counters, encoders, proximity sensors, frequency drives, and servos. Knowledge of PLCs, reading wiring diagrams, PLC ladder and block logic, loading programs, and configuring PLCs, HMI, and scanners. Program basic changes to PLC controllers, such as modifying timing and adding alarms. Diagnose, operate, repair all facility and MHE systems within the distribution center. Working knowledge of computer systems and personal computers; experience with hardware installation and setup (hard drives, RAM, network cards, monitor cards, motherboards). Software experience including MS Office (Excel, Word, IM) and MHE software such as RSLogix, Sort Director, GSMi, IPoint, Flex Sort. Diagnose electrical control issues to component level: capacitors, inductors, diodes, LEDs, transistors, pressure transducers, flow meters, photo‑voltaic sensors, bridge and full‑wave rectifiers. Diagnose communication issues with devices on the MHE network or other networks (PROFIBUS, BACNET, LONWORKS, PROFINET, CAN‑BUS, ASI). Operate and diagnose chill water plant systems including chillers, cooling towers, boilers, pumps, BAS, HVAC, and water treatment. Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve issues efficiently within project timeframes and technical requirements. Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Schedule Full time Salary Range $74,000 - 105,820 This salary range reflects a national average for this job; the actual range may vary based on your locale. Ranges in Colorado/California/Washington/New York/Hawaii/Vermont/Minnesota/Massachusetts/Illinois may be up to 10 % lower than the minimum or 12 % higher than the maximum salary range.
