Prevention Specialist

Description Under the direction of the Clinical Program Manager, the Prevention Specialist provides confidential counseling and testing to individuals at risk for HIV, Hepatitis C (HCV), syphilis, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The role also delivers prevention education services and outreach and requires high cultural competency to meet the unique needs of people affected by adverse social determinants of health and the broader 2SLGBTSIA+ community. The Specialist supports Prisma Community Care’s mission by promoting well‑being and advancing health equity for diverse communities, especially people of color, 2SLGBTQIA+ and Queer individuals, and those affected by HIV. Essential Functions Conduct confidential HIV and STI counseling, testing and refer patients to care per Arizona Department of Health Services standards. Collect and process test specimens, handling blood, rectal, oral and urine samples while following lab safety and infection control protocols. Educate patients on sexual health, wellness and available health services. Lead one‑on‑one education sessions and assessments, making referrals to internal and external services. Promote biomedical prevention services (PrEP, nPEP, Treatment as Prevention) and general wellness visits. Perform no‑cost testing sessions for community members, maintaining 70% patient testing productivity. Provide clear, accurate information to patients and volunteers, demonstrating empathy and a status‑neutral approach. Record all contacts in system databases and EMR within one business day of encounter, completing documentation within three business days. Engage culturally appropriate with all individuals via telephone, e‑mail and in‑person. Refer patients to partner agencies for additional support, including surgical and medical services not available at Prisma. Contact patients to provide test and lab results and assist with their care at Prisma Community Care. Stay current with research, trends and best practices related to gender identity, intersectionality and well‑being. Use a personal vehicle for specimen transport and attend community events; submit a biweekly mileage report. Collaborate with teams to evolve departmental needs, policy, cross‑training and opportunities for growth. Work directly with department leadership on program‑related tasks. Proficiency in venipuncture procedure and needle safety protocols. Ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with culturally diverse populations. Sound understanding of gender identity, expression, presentation, sex and sexual orientation. Valid driver’s license, insurable driving record and reliable personal vehicle for work‑related activities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic medical records, with full HIPAA compliance. Understanding of basic medical terminology. Highly organized self‑starter with excellent problem‑solving and multi‑tasking skills. Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with changing deadlines, maintaining a positive attitude and managing stress proactively. Excellent written and verbal communication, professionalism, flexibility and compassion. Commitment to a mission‑driven agency with significant diversity among clients and staff. Preferred Qualifications At least one year of venipuncture experience in a clinical setting. Experience in a patient‑care setting focused on sexual health and relevant education. Understanding of the relationship between sexual health, HIV, PrEP, PEP and gender‑affirming care. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Familiarity with eClinical Works (eCW) and MEDSIS. Environmental Factors And Physical Requirements Work primarily in a climate‑controlled environment with minimal hazards. Travel outside Phoenix area up to 10% of the time. Activity includes computer use for extended periods and handling bodily fluids. Hourly position with potential evening and weekend work. Duties require walking, sitting, standing; use of hands, talking and hearing; occasional reaching and lifting up to 20 lb; required close and distance vision. Compliance Requirements Obtain a valid Fingerprint Clearance Card within 90 days of employment. Obtain a clear TB test within 30 days of employment. Receive a flu vaccination within 30 days of employment. Complete a Hepatitis‑B primary vaccination series within 30 days of employment. Obtain CPR certification within 30 days of employment.
