Loss Prevention Specialist Job Description Class Summary This class is the third of six levels in the Compliance series. This is a broad classification encompassing incumbents that perform a variety of specialized claims, identify root causes, analyze loss data, evaluate risk exposures, and develop and implement loss control and safety strategies to reduce accidents, injuries, and insurance costs while ensuring compliance and protecting Navajo Housing Authority interests in accordance with applicable policies, regulations, and Tribal, State, and Federal laws. Safety is a critical factor with NHA and all employees will adhere to Safety Policies and ensure safety is how we perform our duties. Essential Duties Claims Investigation: Conduct on-site investigations of property, auto, liability, and workers’ compensation claims to determine root causes, assess damages, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification: Perform safety inspections, surveys, and risk assessments across worksites to identify hazardous conditions, operational risks, and potential loss exposures. Loss Control & Prevention Program Development: Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive loss control strategies to reduce accidents, injuries, and financial losses across property, liability, auto, and workers’ compensation claims. Data Analysis & Trend Monitoring: Collect, maintain, and analyze loss data, claims histories, and injury trends to identify patterns, high-risk areas, and opportunities for risk reduction and cost savings. Corrective Action Planning: Develop practical recommendations and corrective action plans to address identified risks, reduce claim frequency, and minimize severity of future losses. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with applicable safety and risk management regulations, including OSHA standards, and recommend corrective actions for violations or deficiencies. Reporting & Communication: Prepare clear and accurate reports summarizing findings, risk exposures, loss trends, and recommendations for management, insurance carriers, and other stakeholders. Training & Safety Education: Provide training and guidance to employees and departments on injury prevention, safe work practices, and loss control procedures to promote a culture of safety. Stay current with best practices through training, research, collaborative with federal, state, tribal and external agencies. Insurance & Claims Support: Assist with insurance claims processing, evaluate claim files as needed, support field adjusters during inspections, and respond to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level. Training and Experience Associate’s degree in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, Business Administration or related field. 2-3 years experience in risk management, safety, insurance claims, loss prevention, conducting inspections and/or investigations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of the assigned position. Licensing Requirements Valid Driver’s License. Knowledge Functions and structure of the Navajo Housing Authority. Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations related to risk management, occupational safety, and asset protection programs. Claims administration processes for property, auto, liability, and workers’ compensation. Construction safety standards, including Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), toolbox talks, PPE requirements, and safety training practices. Occupational safety principles, hazard control methods, and accident prevention strategies. Root cause analysis techniques and incident investigation procedures. Insurance and risk financing concepts, including loss exposure and liability mitigation. OSHA standards and workplace safety compliance requirements. Data tracking systems and basic statistical concepts related to loss trends and risk evaluation. Skills Conducting safety inspections, field audits, and risk assessments in construction and operational environments. Investigating incidents and claims to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions. Analyzing loss data and identifying trends to reduce risk exposure and claims. Developing risk reports, documentation, and corrective action plans. Training employees on safety practices, hazard awareness, and injury prevention. Computers and standard office software for reporting and recordkeeping. Communicate clearly and enforce safety requirements. Build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups. Manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work under pressure. Exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive information. Interpret policies, procedures, and safety regulations and apply them in the field. Ability to work in field and construction environments and adapt to changing conditions. Physical Requirements Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May be exposed to construction sites, maintenance operations, active work areas, noise, dust, moving equipment, and other workplace hazards while conducting inspections and investigations.
