Senior/Staff Backend Engineer - AICareer Renew is recruiting for one of its clients a Senior/Staff Backend Engineer - AI. This is an onsite position in San Francisco. Salary range: 180-260K USD base plus benefits plus equity. We are an infrastructure layer for the P&C industry, enabling digitization for traditional insurance players and insurtechs alike.We are looking for a Senior/Staff Software Engineer (Backend) with 5 - 15 years of experience (ideally 7-15 years of experience) to join our team building the agentic operations layer for P&C insurance. We're closing a Series A very soon and growing fast – 6x last year, targeting 10x this year. We are seeking a highly autonomous and curious engineer who is excited about owning the design and implementation of end-to-end workflows for insurance agencies — integrating with messy, low-tech systems, building reliable automation on top of them, and iterating directly with customers. You will play a foundational role in the formation of the company, working on hard backend and automation engineering problems from day one.ResponsibilitiesDesign and ship end-to-end agentic workflows that automate real insurance agency operations (collections, renewals, carrier integrations)Integrate with numerous disparate and often low-tech systems, building reliable and high-quality interactions on top of them.Work closely with customers to gather feedback, iterate on projects, and translate technical concepts into understandable language for non-technical stakeholders.Contribute to greenfield engineering work, building on top of our existing browser automation layer.Collaborate with the team through whiteboarding and system design to solve complex problems in a high-stakes domain.Requirements5 - 15 years of experience in backend software engineering at a startup. (Mandatory)Experience at an early-stage, VC-Backed startup (Seed to Series D) within the last 4 years (Mandatory)Proven experience building and shipping backend systems. (Mandatory)Experience in the insurance, finance, or healthcare industry. (Nice-to have)Proficiency in modern backend languages, preferably TypeScript. (Mandatory)Must be actively using modern AI coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor). (Mandatory)Experience with browser automation, web scraping, or creative data extraction. (Nice to have)Demonstrated curiosity and desire to interact directly with customers. (Mandatory)Must work in-person 5 days/week in San Francisco.
