Starting Date: Aug 25, 2026 Job Summary The Cook assists the kitchen manager in the daily operation of the cafeteria food service program; serves temporarily as kitchen manager in the manager’s absence; prepares nutritious meals, snacks, and catering for students, staff, and community. Qualifications Knowledge of food preparation and handling techniques, proper use of food service equipment, food safety and sanitation procedures (HACCP), nutrition services record‑keeping procedures, and basic math for recipe conversion. Skilled in computer entry and cash handling, operation and maintenance of kitchen equipment. Ability to plan assigned work on time with minimal supervision, establish working relationships with students, parents, and school personnel, work harmoniously with others, adhere to drug‑free policies, meet technology standards, complete required training, and communicate in Spanish preferred. Experience in quantity food preparation; previous successful school or institutional food service preferred; experience with the National School Lunch Program preferred. A minimum high school diploma or GED. Current driver’s license and current food handler card or equivalent (ServSafe certificate). Essential Job Functions Assist the kitchen manager and Nutrition Services Supervisor in planning and implementing food service needs. Prepare food including baked goods, entrees, and salad bars. Serve meals, collect money for meals and a‑la carte sales, and account for meals served. Clean dishes, pots, pans, and equipment; maintain highest standards of sanitation. Assist with inventory, produce lists, count supplies, and ensure adequate supplies for future menus. Operate cafeteria computer system, make change, and manage a‑la carte or meal lines. Direct student workers as required. Provide food for catering orders. Perform daily kitchen cleaning. When the manager is absent, perform managerial duties. Provide excellent customer service and model a respectful working and learning environment. Communicate with students, parents, and staff from diverse backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Demands & Work Environment The job requires frequent walking, standing, lifting up to 40 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 75 pounds, and standing on cement or tile floors for up to eight hours. Work is performed in a school kitchen environment, operating kitchen equipment safely, using a computer, and traveling to other program sites if necessary.
