Accounting Lead

Controller | Venture-Backed AI FinTech | New York We're partnering with a venture-backed AI fintech that's building software for institutional financial services clients. As the business continues to scale, they're looking to hire their first in-house Controller to build and own the accounting function. Working closely with leadership and an outsourced accounting provider, you'll establish scalable accounting processes, strengthen financial controls and build the finance infrastructure needed to support the next phase of growth. This is a hands‑on opportunity for someone who enjoys building from scratch, improving processes through automation and AI, and has experience operating within fintech or financial services software businesses. Key Responsibilities Own the month‑end and quarter‑end close process, including journals, reconciliations, accruals and financial reporting. Manage the outsourced accounting function while determining which responsibilities should transition in‑house as the business grows. Take ownership of the company's accounting systems, ERP and finance technology stack. Build and improve accounting policies, controls and reporting processes that can scale alongside the business. Own AP, AR, payroll, expense management and revenue recognition in accordance with US GAAP. Maintain an accurate chart of accounts and ensure the integrity of financial reporting. Coordinate tax filings, external advisors and audit readiness. Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, cash reporting and budget versus actual analysis. Produce accurate financial reporting and key performance metrics for leadership and investors. Drive automation initiatives across the finance function, leveraging AI and modern finance technology to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes. Partner closely with Product, Engineering and Operations teams to support new initiatives and business growth. Candidate Profile 4+ years of progressive accounting experience with ownership of the month‑end close. Experience within a fintech, payments, lending, capital markets, wealthtech, insurtech or financial services software business is strongly preferred. Candidates from broader SaaS backgrounds will only be considered where they've supported products serving financial institutions or regulated financial services customers. Comfortable operating as the first in‑house accounting hire while managing outsourced accounting providers. Strong knowledge of US GAAP, financial controls and accounting best practices. Experience building accounting processes and scalable finance infrastructure within high‑growth businesses. Strong systems mindset with experience using modern ERP and finance technology platforms. Commercial, hands‑on approach with the ability to partner across finance, product and operational teams. Excited by AI, automation and improving finance processes through technology. SaaS revenue recognition (ASC 606). Experience supporting FP&A and budgeting. Exposure to regulated financial services environments.
