Linux Application Support Engineer - Telecom

How strong are you at troubleshooting a production application running on Linux?

A customer reports a problem. The application isn't behaving correctly.

Is it the software? A Linux service? An OS issue? Network connectivity? Routing? SIP signaling?

If you're comfortable getting into the Linux server and figuring that out, Kane Partners would like to speak with you.

We're recruiting an experienced Linux Application Support Engineer for an international software development company with a Northern New Jersey operation.

This position sits at the intersection of software applications, Linux systems, networking and telecommunications.

You don't need to be a software developer. You do need to understand Linux well enough to independently investigate a complex production problem, gather the evidence and work effectively with software developers when an application issue is uncovered.

What You'll Do

- Support sophisticated software applications running on Linux production servers

- Troubleshoot problems across the application, Linux OS and network layers

- Work extensively from the Linux CLI

- Investigate services, processes, system resources, logs and network connectivity

- Gather and analyze application and Linux system logs

- Capture and analyze traffic using tcpdump and Wireshark

- Troubleshoot SIP/VoIP and networking issues

- Apply software fixes, patches and updates

- Prepare MOPs and rollback procedures for production changes

- Participate in scheduled maintenance windows

- Work directly with customer engineering teams on technical issues

- Provide Development with logs, traces, reproduction information and technical findings when software problems are identified

What You'll Bring

- 5+ years of strong hands-on Red Hat/Linux experience

- Experience supporting software applications in production environments

- Strong Linux command-line troubleshooting skills

- Ability to determine whether a problem originates in the application, OS or network

- Strong networking knowledge — TCP/IP, UDP, routing, ports and firewalls

- Knowledge of SIP/VoIP

- Experience with Wireshark and packet analysis

- Experience gathering and analyzing Linux logs and traces

- Strong analytical, documentation and customer communication skills

Additional Experience That's Helpful

Linux scripting - VMware vSphere - Diameter - Basic PHP - Cisco IOS

This isn't help desk support, and it isn't a traditional network engineering position.

It's an investigative technical role within a software environment for someone who likes following a difficult problem across multiple layers until the cause is understood.

If you're genuinely strong in Linux and have experience with SIP/VoIP and networking, we'd like to hear from you.
