Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical - Neuro Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years with 1 year of direct Medical Surgical experience. License: Valid nursing license required. Certifications: BCLS, NIH, NIHSS, ACLS (preferred, not required). Must-Have: Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, including 1 year of Medical Surgical experience. Unit will not accept first-time travelers; must have at least 2 successful contracts before applying. Experience in IV starts, telemetry, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, and Medical Surgical neuro care required. Description: This unit primarily cares for stroke patients. Additional care includes neurosurgery patients and other neuro diagnoses such as epilepsy and traumatic/non-traumatic subdural hematomas. There is a 4-bed epilepsy monitoring unit. The unit trains nurses for the epilepsy monitoring part, but this typically does not affect travelers unless they have been trained. The unit has an average daily census of 50 patients. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6. Travelers are required to float to other Medical Surgical/Telemetry areas as needed. Frequent floating may be required, including potential COVID care units. Weekend shifts are mandatory every other weekend. If a traveler calls in for a scheduled weekend shift, they will need to make up that shift based on unit needs. All travelers are expected to work during two of three major holidays. RTO requests must be pre-approved and cannot include weekends. Travelers must pass EKG testing prior to starting in this specialty. Non-billable pre-start modules must be completed online before the start date.
