Principal Engineer - Transmission Scenario Planning - External Analysis Specialist

Primary Purpose Develop and lead teams in studies, plans, criteria, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of Exelon’s electric generation, transmission, distribution, gas and telecommunications facilities. Provide consultation and recommendations to the Company and other business units based on studies of company or customer‑owned systems, processes, equipment, vehicles or facilities. Review financial data from budget and actual project costs and act as a recognized technical authority in a specialized engineering area. This position may require extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies. Hybrid work: office in Chicago, IL; Oakbrook Terrace, IL; Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA; Kennett Square, PA; Washington, DC; or Newark, DE. Employees must be in office at least three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Primary Duties Perform consultation and training on highly complex and unique technical areas requiring advanced engineering principles. Evaluate complex technical issues demanding highly specialized knowledge in specific areas and recommend actions or programs for resolution. Lead the implementation of large specialized technical projects and/or teams to develop studies, proposals, and designs while considering cost effectiveness. Participate in technical and industry societies and committees to enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues in the company’s area of interest. Participate in department planning, provide budget recommendations, and monitor performance to achieve committed results. Act as an expert witness and provide expert opinions for regulatory and/or legal proceedings. Apply engineering expertise on a high‑performance engineering team to support detailed analyses assessing transmission system performance. Support technical aspects of scenario planning initiatives, such as submissions to RTO long‑term planning windows. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop transmission system upgrade plans. Support NERC compliance efforts related to transmission planning activities. Identify new analyses, technologies, and/or processes to improve efficiency. Job Scope Highly influential on strategic management decisions that can have a major impact on the company. Support various transmission planning functions aligning with the requirements and processes of PJM, MISO, SPP, and other North American ISOs/RTOs. Apply technical knowledge to support advanced power system modeling and simulation activities. Minimum Qualifications Master of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer. Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems. Knowledge and ability to apply problem‑solving approaches and engineering theory. Knowledge of engineering designs, principles, and practices. 8+ years of experience in specific areas of engineering and recognized industry expert (reduced by one year if Licensed Professional Engineer). Advanced knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles. Advanced knowledge of latest technologies necessary to perform a variety of specialized unique or complex assignments for various installation types of services. Industry expert who participates or leads industry committees or working groups or has published technical documents. License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing. Preferred Qualifications Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all management levels. Strong written and oral communication skills. Advanced steady‑state power‑flow experience, including model‑building, contingency analysis, transfer/voltage stability analysis, and short‑circuit analysis. Experience in competitive transmission development and regulatory activities. Strong Transmission Planning experience working with PJM, MISO, SPP, or other North American ISO/RTO planning processes.
