School Bus Mechanic

Salary: $21.30 per hour - commensurate with experience

Terms/Benefits: 2026-2027 School Year

12 month position - 8.0 hours per day

General Information:

Performs skilled school bus and automobile fleet maintenance duties of a difficult to complex nature, working under limited supervision.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of 7 years of experience in general automotive repair, diesel engine, and school bus maintenance.
• Experience in electrical systems.
• ASE Certified or willing to obtain certification in air conditioning systems.
• Possess or be willing to obtain an Arizona School Bus Driver Certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Must possess an ability to work with and supervise others.
• Skills with anti-lock brake systems.
• Skills with computer diagnostics systems.
• Skills with wheelchair securement systems.
• Ability to perform minor and major repairs on vehicles.
• Ability to repair interior of vehicles.
• Knowledge and understanding of Arizona school bus safety inspection requirements.
• Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members.
• Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies.
• Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response.
• Skills in time management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Monitors, maintains and repairs all vehicles to meet state safety compliance and pass emission control inspections.
• Inspects, diagnoses, and performs minor and major repairs and maintenance on buses, automobiles, trucks, and other mechanical equipment.
• Estimates time and cost of repairs to vehicles and equipment requiring major mechanical work.
• Compares costs with vendors of parts, fuel, outside repairs, and supplies.
• Maintains parts and fuel inventories at economical level.
• Ensures warranty work is performed according to manufacturers' policies.
• Communicates with school bus drivers regarding mechanical complaints.
• Schedules work to be performed by other District mechanics.
• Establishes work priorities according to needs of the department.
• Makes service calls for emergency repairs.
• Maintains files for all vehicles for repairs and services done in-house and by private companies.
• Drives school bus on a route or fieldtrip as required.
