Assistant Controller

Assistant Controller - Onsite in Midtown Manhattan Boutique luxury jewelry company is seeking an experienced and hands‑on Assistant Controller to support the financial and operational needs of the business. The role is ideal for an accounting and finance professional who enjoys working in an entrepreneurial environment and is comfortable balancing accounting, finance, payroll, and administrative HR responsibilities. The Assistant Controller is a key partner to the VP of Operations and Finance in helping build scalable processes as the company continues to grow. This is a highly visible role requiring strong accounting fundamentals, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to operate independently while managing multiple priorities. Responsibilities Prepare and post journal entries and support the month‑end close process Reconcile balance sheet and general ledger accounts, identifying trends and variances Support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes with a focus on accuracy and efficiency Maintain supporting schedules for key accounts, including intercompany transactions Assist with sales tax/VAT calculations and filings under supervision Ensure accounting records comply with GAAP and internal control policies Financial Analysis & Reporting Analyze monthly financial results and assist in explaining variances to budget and prior periods Support cash flow tracking and assist with short‑term cash forecasting Assist in preparing internal management reports and KPI dashboards Support budgeting and forecasting activities by gathering data and performing analysis Assist in producing financial data for board‑level and executive reporting Audit, Compliance & External Relationships Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners Assist with AML and other regulatory compliance initiatives Maintain organized records to support audit readiness and regulatory requirements Systems, Data & Process Improvements Maintain accurate financial data within the accounting and ERP system Assist with accounting system enhancements, automation initiatives, and process improvements to increase efficiency and scalability Support e‑commerce accounting and payment processing reconciliations Leverage AI‑enabled tools and automation technologies (e.g., data analysis tools, workflow automation, reporting enhancements) to streamline reconciliations, reporting, and data validation processes Use analytical tools to identify inefficiencies, anomalies, and opportunities for process optimization Maintain organized electronic financial records and documentation to support audit readiness and reporting accuracy Payroll & Human Resources Administration Process semi‑monthly payroll and maintain payroll records Coordinate payroll changes including new hires, terminations, compensation changes, and deductions Reconcile payroll‑related accounts and support payroll tax compliance Coordinate employee onboarding and off‑boarding process Maintain personnel records and employment documentation Assist with benefits administration and employee enrollment changes Coordinate with benefit providers and external HR partners Ensure compliance with employment‑related documentation and reporting requirements Cross‑Functional & External Support Collaborate with internal teams to understand business activity and financial impact Prepare schedules and documentation for external CPA firm and tax filing Assist with compliance‑related documentation (e.g., PCI, AML) as needed Strong ownership mentality and ability to work independently Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail Sound judgment and ability to solve problems proactively Ability to connect accounting activity to broader business objectives Strong communication and interpersonal skills Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment Adaptable, resourceful, and willing to roll up their sleeves Naturally curious and continuously seeks ways to improve processes Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 5‑8+ years of progressive accounting experience Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting best practices Experience managing month‑end close and financial reporting processes Payroll processing experience required HR administration and employee onboarding/off‑boarding experience preferred Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, formulas, data analysis) Experience with Sage Intacct strongly preferred Experience in a small business, entrepreneurial, or high‑growth environment preferred #J-18808-Ljbffr Career Group Search
