Title Attorney Hiring Range Starting salary at $90,000+ Agency VA State Crime Commission Agency Website Recruitment Type General Public - G Overview The Virginia State Crime Commission is a legislative agency that conducts studies related to criminal justice and public safety matters for the Virginia General Assembly. We are looking for an Attorney to join our team. The role involves researching and analyzing public policy issues related to criminal justice and public safety, drafting memos, presentations, and research reports, reviewing and drafting legislation, identifying key issues and recommendations based on study topics, presenting research findings to Commission members and legislators, reviewing case files, preparing meeting materials, and performing other administrative tasks. Knowledge of criminal law and procedure is required. Responsibilities The position requires conducting legal research, drafting legislative language, preparing research reports, and presenting findings. The Attorney will also analyze and synthesize complex policy issues, develop recommendations, and support the Commission’s legislative agenda. The work is performed in an objective, unbiased, and non‑partisan manner, both independently and as part of a team. Some overnight travel and field work may be required. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited law school. Member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing. One year of experience practicing criminal law in Virginia (preferred). Knowledge of Virginia’s legislative process (preferred). Experience in public policy analysis and development (preferred). Required Skills Strong research, writing, analytical, and communication skills are essential. The candidate should demonstrate time management, attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to collaborate with others.
