PURPOSE

The primary goal of a permanent substitute is to provide instruction to students during the absence of a teacher. Assignments will be prearranged through the school office on a day-to-day basis. This individual also provides supervision throughout the building and school year.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times. Implement lesson plans as much as possible to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of all students when the regular employee is absent. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of all students. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Guide the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals and establish and communicate clear objectives to students for all lessons and units. Strive to implement the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals while maintaining a positive attitude. Assess students daily and provide appropriate feedback to each teacher. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation. Assist administration in implementing all policies governing student life and conduct and maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and appropriate manner. Supervise before and after school detention, tutoring, study hall, athletic events/prep, and bus duty as assigned and coordinated with the building administrator. Maintain visibility throughout the building on a daily basis (hallways and classrooms) to provide active supervision before, after, and during school. Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as needed. Perform other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public School District.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree; Substitute Certification Preferred: Certification in a content area; Prior experience in a school setting and/or working with young people Ideal: Previous teaching experience To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Technology: Integrate technology into daily instruction; present information using varied media; access and present online information to enhance instruction; lead students in online research and multimedia projects; use district software for grades and student information; use smart boards, projectors, and other instructional technology per district policies. Physical Demands: Speak and hear in a noisy environment; move around classroom to interact and manage students; read handwritten or printed material. Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is essential. Conditions and Environment: Work in a noisy and active school environment; occasionally work outdoors for brief periods loading and unloading students from transportation.
