Corporate Affairs Director, Research What you will do In this vital role you will act as a key communication counselor focusing on our Research organization—the function that discovers breakthrough therapies. You will develop and implement strategic communication plans, ensuring audiences understand and appreciate the innovation happening in research and how Amgen Research is uniquely positioned at the intersection of biology and technology. You will work closely with the Research Senior Leadership Team to deliver a consistent and compelling narrative about our drug‑discovery innovations. This position reports to the Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, Research & Development, with a dotted line to the SVP Research. Location: Thousand Oaks or San Francisco are highly preferred as these align with Amgen’s largest research population and clients. Responsibilities Develop communications strategies and plans that effectively and consistently communicate to targeted key audiences and stakeholders about the science and innovation going on in research, and execute those plans to deliver measurable results. Develop and support executive engagement plans for Research SVP and key VPs, including proactively preparing company spokespeople via media training and presentation skills. Partner with the media relations team to address media requests related to research and proactively secure press coverage with trade press to elevate Amgen as a leader in transformative drug discovery. Collaborate with the product communications team and therapeutic leads on therapeutic area strategy and positioning. Manage and direct public relations agency partners to ensure maximum impact and assistance in reaching desired communications goals and objectives. Work in partnership with Research leaders and HR on employee engagement and internal communications. Partner successfully with investor relations to ensure consistency of messages to external audiences, including media and the financial community. Basic Qualifications Doctorate degree & 4 years of communications or public relations experience Master’s degree & 7 years of communications or public relations experience Bachelor’s degree & 9 years of communications or public relations experience Preferred Qualifications Degree in Public Relations, Communications, or Journalism Experience working in‑house or within a PR agency Biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or healthcare product public relations—including corporate experience highly desired Hands‑on experience in scientific/research communications desirable Strong oral and presentation skills; ability to negotiate and persuade Outstanding writing skills and proven media relations skills that are results‑oriented Strategic and creative thinker with the ability to develop actionable programs that integrate soundly with business objectives Ability to navigate a challenging and dynamic environment and deal with rapidly changing priorities Ability to interact with all levels of management and manage staff and vendors Ability to think quickly, analytically, and creatively to accommodate a dynamic communications environment Excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiastic, team player, and self‑starter; serious dedication to hard work and excellence Benefits and Salary The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
