Veterinarian - Area Chief of Staff

Area Chief of Staff Salary range for this full‑time role is $135,405 – $195,585 annually. Variable pay based on production is also available in all states except Puerto Rico. The stated range is a general hiring range for the area; the specific rate will be determined based on experience, skill, abilities and education, and may vary by location and schedule. This posting will remain open for a minimum of two weeks or until a sufficient pool of qualified applicants has been received. Summary of Job Purpose and Function The Area Chief of Staff leads, develops and manages associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield attracts, develops, engages and retains doctors that deliver quality care and meet expected hospital performance measures. This position drives the culture and delivery of high‑quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in assigned hospitals, ensuring every pet receives consistent care aligned with the six domains of quality—safe, effective, patient/client‑centered, timely, efficient and equitable care. Essential Responsibilities Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as responsible veterinarian for veterinary and pharmacy board permits as required by federal, state, or local law. Manage ownership and inventory of controlled substances for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention by consistently assessing risk, ensuring proactive retention strategy, and creating a culture of community and engagement where doctors feel supported and can be successful. Provide effective medical leadership by driving an inclusive and collaborative work environment with practice managers. Validate clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and veterinary technicians through medical record reviews, quality assignments, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Provide veterinary services; time spent in clinical role will depend on number of hospitals, direct reports, and productivity. Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians, ensuring an engaging experience that produces a productive doctor knowledgeable in Banfield quality standards, Optimum Wellness Plans, processes, and workflows. Ensure experiential learning to develop clinical, surgical, and dental skills based on individual veterinarian needs. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent. Act as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community. Deliver an excellent hospital experience to student externs, student job program participants, and veterinary candidates during hospital observations. Work with associate doctors to ensure they have the skills to achieve productivity goals through high‑quality medicine, preventive care focus, great client experience, and partnership with the hospital team. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs for assigned hospitals through leadership and partnership with practice managers. Develop, execute, and revise plans to achieve targeted KPIs with practice managers. Accountable to hospital OGSM performance as quality medicine delivers operational outcomes. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan for assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance to Banfield’s clinical essentials, government regulations, legislation, and veterinary industry standards via quality assessments, medical record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Meet all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including controlled substance management and radiation safety. Create and execute timely plans to resolve identified gaps. Champion preventive‑care culture by communicating, demonstrating, and validating behaviors that drive Optimum Wellness Plan growth and retention. Create a “say yes” culture by driving access to care and superior client service to meet or exceed client experience scorecard goals. Resolve client complaints related to the standard of medical care in a timely manner. Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver high‑level veterinary care to every pet in a professional and ethical manner, ensuring exceptional client experience and preventive care deliverables. Gain the confidence and compliance of clients through appropriate preventive care, complete diagnostic work‑ups, thorough treatment plans, home‑care instruction, and follow‑up planning. Special Working Conditions Work involves long periods at a computer and may require more than 40 hours per week for project timelines and deadlines. Mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematical and language ability are required. Physical demands include standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs, good hand‑eye coordination, and visual acuity. The noise level is moderately high. Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances may occur. Some travel is required to assist other area hospitals, vendor visits, and associate education. Banfield policies do not supersede legal responsibilities and medical judgment. Experience, Education and/or Training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state veterinary boards. Minimum 3 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
