Police Officer Salary:

Starting salary ranges from approximately $62,000 to $91,416, based on experience.

The University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community who study, research, work, and live on the Coral Gables Campus.

A Police Officer’s primary responsibility is to protect life and property on a 24-hour basis.

Essential Duties 

The following duties are representative for this position. As assigned at the discretion of the Chief of Police, a Police Officer may serve as a uniformed patrol officer, detective, community police officer (e.g. “Canes Resource Officer”), directed patrol officer, canine officer, or a problem-solving team officer.

A Police Officer has the primary responsibility to provide protective and law enforcement services on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. In addition, officers provide special services to the University community consistent with the mission of the University and the Police Department.

This position is designated as essential personnel and requires continued service during periods where the University may suspend normal operations due to severe weather, natural disasters or hazardous situations.

The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

Additional Responsibilities: 

1.    Perform in a manner consistent with the University’s Business Conduct and Ethical Standards.

2.    Respond to emergency calls and all calls for service.

3.    Preserve public peace.

4.    Enforce state laws and county ordinances.

5.    Facilitate the safe and efficient flow of traffic.

6.    Complete incident reports and other necessary paperwork.

7.    Conduct extensive preliminary criminal and traffic investigations.

8.    File criminal charges and testify in court, prefile conferences and depositions.

9.    Arrest violators of criminal and traffic laws through physical apprehension and/or issuance of written summonses requiring court appearance; testify in court, as needed.

10.  Send referrals to Student Affairs as appropriate.

11.  Administer first aid and/or render assistance to injured or ill individuals; transport to the University Health Center or local hospital and request rescue services when necessary.

12.  Check the security of University property, and effectively patrol assigned areas in an unpredictable manner.

13.  Patrol using marked police vehicles, bicycles or foot patrol and serve in designated assignments as needed.

14.  Self-initiate proactive patrols and document activity in the CAD system.

15.  Observe and report unsafe conditions and initiate corrective measures.

16.  Serve as a police dispatcher in absence of regularly assigned dispatch personnel, direct officers to respond to calls for assistance; document pertinent information in the CAD system. Maintain equipment logs and issue keys and equipment to authorized persons. Answer incoming phone calls requesting assistance and/or information.

17.  Assist visitors and University employees with directions to buildings, classes, and departments. Provide traffic and parking information.

18.  Coordinate motorist assistance for vehicle lockouts, jump starts, flat tires, or by summoning appropriate assistance.

19.  Perform administrative tasks such as delivering emergency messages, collecting lost and found items, conducting daily patrol vehicle safety and cleanliness inspections, and delivering reports and documents to and from the Coral Gables Police Department.

20.  Provide escorts for students, faculty, and staff upon request, primarily during nighttime hours.

21. Work special duty assignments during University-sponsored functions, athletic events, and student social activities. Duties at events include traffic control, crowd control and safety services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge 

• Modern police methods and practices.

• Geography of the City of Coral Gables, University of Miami campus, its buildings, and other relevant venues.

• Applicable laws; County and City ordinances, departmental policies and procedures, University policies, and the Student’s Rights and Responsibilities handbook.

• Clery Act requirements.

• Title IX requirements.

• Appropriate knowledge and responsibility to balance their position to make decisions necessary for the effective execution of their duties. All personnel are fully accountable for the use or misuse of authority and/or the failure to use that authority.

• Computer aptitude sufficient for daily paperwork and CAD data entry.

• Know all aspects of police work: arrest techniques, defensive tactics, vehicle operations-normal and emergency situations.

• Safe motor vehicle operation under normal and emergency conditions.

• Safe and appropriate use all departmental weapons and equipment.

Skills and Abilities: 

• Proficiency in the safe use, handling and maintenance of firearms, other weapons, and related law enforcement equipment.

• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.

• Willingness and ability to work assigned shifts in a 24/7/365 operational environment.

• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly, calmly, and effectively.

• Skill in preparing clear, concise and accurate reports.

• Certification or qualification to administer first aid.

• Proficiency in the use of standard office equipment, including personal computers.

• Physical capability and knowledge of defensive tactics to safely restrain and subdue suspects.

• Ability to handle situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, while respecting the rights of others.

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to access situations quickly and determine appropriate actions.

• Ability to recognize and identify criminal activity.

• Skill in mediating disputes and resolving conflicts.

• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

• Effective written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with students, employees, and the public through the use of phone, email and personal contact.

• Proficiency in public speaking.

• Demonstrated teamwork, cooperation with officials and fellow police officers, and a commitment to continuous professional development in law enforcement.

• Ability to apply Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) techniques when assisting people in distress.

• Ability to evaluate situations and communicate critical information to supervisors promptly.

Supervision Given: Police Officers must provide general direction to student staff and contract security personnel and may supervise 3-5 police officers when serving as acting sergeant.

Supervision received: Reports to the assigned shift commander or command officer, depending on the assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS 

License and Certifications

• Valid Florida Driver’s License required.

• Must be a certified law enforcement officer in the state of Florida, having successfully completed an  FDLE-approved academy.

• FDLE certification is required at the time of application.

Minimum Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.

• Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation conducted by UMPD/Coral Gables Police Department.

• Must not have more than 5 moving traffic citations resulting in a guilty plea.

Education/Training

• Must possess a minimum of 54 college credits, or at least 3 years of military service or prior law enforcement experience.
