A day in the life

You step onto the yard before dawn, walk the lanes, and confirm that forklifts, order pickers, cranes, and hand tools are ready. You brief a team of 7–10 shipping professionals, align the day’s priorities, and turn operational reports into a clear action plan—right down to overtime needs. By mid-morning, you’re coordinating with Sales on hot shipments and quality changes, with Logistics on flatbeds, motor freight, and hot shots, and with QC to resolve any discrepancies. By day’s end, the dock is organized, orders are verified, and customers are on schedule.

Location and shifts

Role based with our client in south Houston, TX.

• 1st Shift: 5:00 am – 3:00 pm
• 2nd Shift: 2:30 pm – 12:30 pm (+$2.00 shift differential)

What you’ll lead

• Own day-to-day yard operations so material is picked, packed, checked, and shipped accurately, efficiently, and on time.
• Delegate workload and coach department leads while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment.
• Direct a 7–10 person shipping team; provide training on company processes and procedures; submit training records; identify and close skill gaps.
• Attend production meetings; surface departmental issues and drive corrective actions and continuous improvement.
• Use daily operational reports to set priorities and deploy OT as needed.

Cross-functional coordination

• Sales: manage priorities, quality changes, cancellations, ship-via selections, order substitutions, project orders, and escalations.
• Logistics: plan outbound shipments across flatbeds, motor freight, and hot shots; manage dock space and lanes daily.
• QC: resolve material discrepancies and non-conforming stock; align on corrective actions.
• Receiving, Front Office, and Sales: communicate clearly via email and in person to keep orders moving.

Materials verification and documentation

• Perform visual inspections.
• Record heat number(s) for each line item on the Product Release.
• Confirm material markings match the Product Release.
• Ensure the Product Release is fully and accurately completed.
• Verify wrapped pallet information is written correctly.
• Place the BOL with the correct orders prior to shipment.

Will-calls and small parcels

• Load will-call vehicles correctly and quickly.
• Capture photo verification for each shipment leaving the shipping docks.
• Confirm all small parcel shipments are packaged, labeled, and sent UPS the same day.

Shipping dock control

• Keep aisles clear and dock lanes organized for forklift traffic.
• Stage shipments in correct lanes and run daily checks for missed shipments.

Quality Management Systems (QMS)

• Train on department Work Instructions and Job Scope.
• Train on the Quality Policy and department processes, including process flow.
• Conduct meetings, submit training records, and complete quarterly competency reviews.
• Pinpoint and address additional training needs.

Safety leadership

• Hold brief daily safety meetings.
• Maintain clear aisle ways; organize racks and dock space.
• Keep equipment checklists current; schedule quarterly maintenance for hand tools, pickers, forklifts, and more.
• Enforce and monitor Lock-out/Tag-out.
• Communicate equipment breakdowns and hazards to upper management and HSE.
• Continuously create and implement a safe work environment.

Qualifications

• Speak and read English; bilingual Spanish preferred.
• 3+ years of PVF industry experience.
• Ability to interpret industry specifications, charts, and tables.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic computer skills; MS Word, Excel, and Outlook experience preferred.
• Solid reading, writing, and math skills.
• Lift up to 50 lbs; stand and operate assigned equipment for extended periods.
• Self-starter with strong attention to detail; able to juggle multiple priorities.
