Director of Business Development

Bradley Arant Boult Cummings

Position Summary:

Reporting to the firm's COO, the Director of Business Development is a senior strategic leader responsible for partnering with the firm's attorneys to drive revenue growth, strengthen client relationships, and support the firm's practice groups and industry teams. This role works with firm leadership, practice chairs, and attorneys to develop and execute business development strategies that enhance market position and support long-term growth.

The Director oversees Business Development (BD) and Events team members, leads strategic initiatives, and ensures consistent, high-quality execution across the firm.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning & Leadership
  • Develop and implement strategic business development plans for key practice groups, teams, and markets.
  • Partner with practice leaders and firm leadership to identify growth opportunities, target clients, and competitive positioning strategies.
  • Lead and mentor a team of business development professionals, providing direction, coaching, and performance management.
  • Partner with Practice Management in the development of annual practice group business plans and ensure alignment with firmwide goals.
  • Monitor market trends, competitive activity, and industry developments to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Provide training and coaching to attorneys on business development best practices, including client relationship management, pitch preparation, and strategic networking.
Client Development & Relationship Management
  • Drive initiatives to deepen existing client relationships and expand work with high-value clients.
  • Support attorneys in identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, including cross-selling across practices and offices.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to prepare for client meetings, pitches, and strategic conversations.
Pitches & RFP Management
  • Direct the development of compelling, customized pitches, proposals, and RFP responses for major opportunities.
  • Ensure materials reflect the firm's strengths, differentiators, and client value proposition.
  • Oversee pipeline tracking, lead generation, and reporting on BD activity and outcomes.
Marketing & Thought Leadership Integration
  • Partner with Marketing to promote thought leadership, events, sponsorships, and campaigns that support BD priorities.
  • Ensure consistent messaging, branding, and positioning across all BD materials.
  • Support attorneys in developing content, speaking opportunities, and visibility strategies.
BD Team Management & Collaboration
  • Manage BD managers and coordinators supporting assigned practices and teams.
  • Foster strong collaboration with the Marketing team.
  • Promote best practices, process improvements, and knowledge sharing across the BD function.
Events Team Management & Collaboration
  • Oversee the Events Team responsible for client development, client entertainment, sponsorships, and relationship-building events across practices and markets.
  • Ensure client development events are strategically aligned with firm and practice group business development objectives, target audience, and clients.
  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to ensure events reflect the firm's brand, professionalism, and client-service standards and are delivered on or under budget without compromising quality.
Data, Analytics & Reporting
  • Prepare reports and insights for practice leaders and firm leadership to support strategic decisions.
  • Evaluate ROI of BD initiatives and recommend improvements.
Operational Excellence
  • Oversee budgets for BD initiatives and sponsorships.
  • Ensure BD processes, systems, and tools support efficiency and scalability.
  • Maintain high standards of quality, accuracy, and professionalism in all BD deliverables.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or related field.
  • Previous experience with law firms (preferred).
  • Demonstrated success leading BD strategy for complex practice groups or industry teams.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Expertise in pitch development, client targeting, and strategic planning.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strategic thinker with strong business acumen.
  • Influential leader who can partner effectively with attorneys.
  • Exceptional writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Data-driven mindset with strong analytical capabilities.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and client-service orientation.
