Join our smart and dedicated team as we work to advance and operate energy systems and apply for our Fuel Engineer position. This position is responsible for field and in-plant activities for operation and minor maintenance of fuel, ash handling, and water treatment systems. As directed by the Lead Engineer, assist the Shift Engineer in performing his/her duties.

Minimum requirements to be successful in this role:

• Hold current Minnesota Special Engineer License.
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. 
• Physically able to climb over and around equipment, lift material up to 50 pounds, and work with common tools and equipment. 
• Capable of working rotating shifts.
• Valid driver’s license required and clear driving record.

Preferred requirements:

• Technical education related to below duties.
• Experience in the operation and repair of wood and gas fired boilers using oil as back-up fuel, steam turbine and electric drives, pumps, and other related equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Operate the heating, cooling, distribution, power generation, and related equipment in a safe, efficient manner, ensuring compliance with all pertinent regulations, with minimal direction.

1. Perform in-field operation of fuel and ash handling, chiller and cooling towers and other plant equipment as required and as directed by the Lead Engineer or designee or by supervisor.

1. Must be willing to work rotating 12-hour shifts and mandatory overtime as required

1. Have basic electronic computer knowledge to operate boiler plant equipment, as well as outlook, Excel or Word. 

1. Perform lubrication where required and on schedule specified by the Facility Lubrication Program.

1. Assist in record keeping and maintenance of the plant logbook for all equipment.

1. Perform housekeeping as specified by the Facility Housekeeping Plan and as assigned by supervisor or Lead Engineer.

1. Assist Lead Engineer and Relief Lead Engineer in making adjustments to chiller, cooling tower, fuel and ash equipment; controls and in coordination of fuel delivery, ash pickup, and other deliveries.

1. Assist in plant equipment maintenance. Perform minor maintenance walkthroughs for the purpose of repairing minor maintenance items. Document items found but not repaired on a Work Order.

1. Perform equipment isolation and lockouts to assure a high degree of personnel safety and equipment protection.

1. Perform other tasks as directed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to climb ramps/stairs; communicate verbally by expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to clearly impart oral information to other workers, customers, or the public; crawling; crouching; gross manipulation by seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hands; foot/leg controls; the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds; kneeling; lifting up to 50 lbs.; pulling; reaching at/below shoulder level by extending hand and arms from 0 up to 150 degrees in a vertical arc; reaching overhead by extending hands and arms in a 150 to 180 degrees vertical arc; standing/walking; stooping; confined space entry into a space with limited entry or exit.

The employee is frequently required to use a respirator for special operations/maintenance just-in-time qualification; climbing ladders/ropes/scaffolding ; far visual acuity of 20 feet or more; fine manipulation by picking, pinching; or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand; keyboarding; carrying up to 25 lbs.; near vision acuity at approximately 20 inches or less; peripheral vision by observing an area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point; and pushing.

Must be capable of maneuvering throughout industrial facilities such as energy plans and building HVAC mechanical rooms, etc.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position involves working in a steam, hot water, and/or chilled water plant and/or its distribution system. While performing job duties, employees may occasionally encounter potential hazards, including fumes, airborne particles, high-pressure steam in piping or equipment, both hot and cold temperatures, and hazards associated with moving machinery. The work environment's noise level typically ranges from moderate to loud. Other potential hazards common to heating and cooling plants may include confined spaces, slippery surfaces, rotating equipment, chemical handling (e.g., water treatment chemicals), and burns. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided and physical controls are in place as needed to mitigate these risks.

This is a union position with an hourly pay at $49.29

This is an I.B.E.W. Local 23 position. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is also provided.
