USDA-ARS Fellowship in Agricultural Data Science

Position Overview The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) – Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is offering a research opportunity in Columbia, Missouri. The project focuses on integrating spatial and temporal agricultural data to develop tools that help farmers optimize production and profit. Responsibilities Participate in an ongoing research project that integrates multiple data sources such as remote sensing, water quality, soil health, and crop yield data. Compile and analyze data at varying spatial and temporal resolutions under the guidance of a mentor. Collaborate with scientists from hydrology, soil science, and agronomy to interpret findings. Contribute to the entire research process from data collection to data analysis. Learning Objectives Under the guidance of a mentor, the fellow will gain experience in compiling and analyzing diverse datasets, and will understand the research workflow from start to finish. Appointment Details Start date: June 2026 (flexible) Length: 1 year, renewable based on funding. Participation: Full time. Stipend: $5,500–$6,000 per month. Eligibility Citizenship: U.S. citizen only. Education: Master’s degree received within the last two years or currently pursuing. Minimum overall GPA: 3.00. Qualifications Currently pursuing or has obtained a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, data science, environmental science, agronomy, etc.). Preferred Skills Experience handling large datasets. Performing quality checks and validation procedures to ensure data integrity. Program Requirements Program administered by ORAU via ORISE; participants are not employees of USDA, ARS, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
